Biography* | Lillian M. Johnson Manahan, 1898-1973: Lillian was the second child and first daughter born to Joseph Johnson, a first generation Danish-American born in Illinois, and Mary Casey, a first generation Irish-American. In 1900 the family rented at 4408 State Street in Chicago's 29th ward (Lake township). The father Charles worked in a laundry. In 1910, they rented at 4403 Dearborn Street in the 30th ward. Four children had been born into the family but only three were living. In 1920, they were renting at 6748 Morgan, Street in the 32nd ward. The mother Mary Casey had died. The father Charles was a saloon keper and Lillian, 21, was working as a bookkeeper in a tea company. In 1930, married, Lillian and husband Lewis were renting, for $55/month, at 7847 Honore Street in the 18th ward. They had 1-year/5-month-old twins and Lillian's sister Florence was living with them. By 1940, they owned their home on South Hale Avenue. Lillian, 74, of 11606 South Hale Avenue, Chicago, died at home on a Tuesday. Her husband Lewis was informant on the death cert. Cause of death was arteriosclerotic coronary heart disease (5-years). Lillian was survived by her husband, two daughters and one son. The funeral was held on Thursday at Saint Walter Catholic church, 11722 Oakley Avenue. Laughlin Sons funeral directors, 2100 West 95th Street, Chicago was in charge. |

Florence, 84, of 10526 South Claremont, died on a Sunday. A niece was informant on the death cert. Florence was survived by her husband, nieces and nephews. The funeral was held on Tuesday. Laughlin Sons Funeral Directors were in charge. |

Biography* | Dora M. Smith Manahan, 1900-1972: Dora was the second child born of two and the only daughter. Her parents both of whom were first generation English-American were born in Minnesota. In 1900, the family owned a mortgaged farm in Pilot township, Fillmore County, Minnesota. By 1910, they had moved in Chatfield City in Olmsted County and were renting a house on Main Street. The father John was selling automobiles. By 1920, they owned a mortgaged house in Chatfield City, Fillmore County3. Dora had completed four-years of high school. Married in 1922 to John Manahan, by 1930 Dora and John with two children were renting in Chatfield for $23.00/month. In 1940, they owned a $2,500 house in Chatfield and now had three children. Dora was a member of the Altar Society at Saint Mary's Catholic church in Chatfield. Dora Manahan, 71, died on a Monday in Florida where she was wintering with her husband. She was known to have a heart condition. Dora was survived by her husband John, two sons, one daughter, seven-grandchildren, and one-great-grandchild. The funeral was held on Friday at Saint Mary's in Chatfield with Rev Frank Enright officicating. Pall bearers were David, Lee, Keith, Craig, William and Donald Manahan. |
