Biography* | Ida Elizabeth Spieker Touhy, 1894-1928: Ida was the youngest of eight born to first generation German-Americans. Her father Henry was born in Wisconsin, her mother Mary in Iowa. By the time Ida was six, the family had moved to the 2nd ward of Melrose City in Stearns County (the next county south of Todd County where she was born). Her father's occupation was a logger on a farm he rented. Ida attended schools in Browerville later graduating from Melrose High School. Ida continued her studies at the Minneapolis School of Music and the University, completing the course at both institutions. Some of her siblings were also well educated. Ida had an older sister that was a teacher and an older brother that was an artist. Ida served as music supervisor in the Slayton schools for one year and for two years was in charge of the music department of the Chatfield schools. She married Leo Tuohy at Melrose in 1922 and went to live on the Tuohy farm Chatfield. Ida, 33, died in Saint Mary's hospital, Rochester, on a Monday after a stay of eight-days and 12-days after giving birth. Cause of death was postpartum endometritis (9-days), general peritonitis (7-days). Ida was attended by physician Ralph G. Mills of Mayo Clinic, Rochester. She was survived by her husband Leo, four children, her mother Mrs Edward (Mary) Host of Melrose, two brothers J. H. Spieker of Minneapolis and R. Spieker of Saint Cloud, and three sisters Mrs C. W. Buss of Canada and Mrs S. P. Philips of Minneapolis and Mrs W. J. Hayes of Superior . The funeral was held from Saint Mary's, Chatfield, on Thursday. The Rev Coleman officiated. Undertaker J. H. Towey of Rochester was in charge. |
