Biography* Veronica Julia "Vera" Manahan Dempsey, 1893-1977:
Vera grew up on farms in Elmira township, Olmsted County, Minnesota and Chatfield township, Fillmore County. In 1920, at age 26, Vera was living with her parents and was employed as a public school teacher. Early in 1930, she was a roomer at 407 Fouth Street SW in Rochester's 2nd ward and was working as a clerk in a clinic. After their marriage, Vera and her husband William Dempsey farmed in the Chatfield area. Vera was a member of the Altar Society at Saint Mary's Catholic church in Chatfield.

Vera, 83, of 255 Winona Sreet SE, Chatfield, died on a Thursday at Methodist hospital in Rochester. She had been admitted the day before. Cause of death was diffuse peritonitis and ulcerative colitis w/perforations. An autopsy was performed. Her attending physician was H. Okazaki (MD) of the Mayo clinic. The clinic records provided iinformant on the death cert. The remains were removed to Chatfield on the day of death. Vera was survived by a son, two daughters, eight grandchildren, brothers Lewis Manahan of Chicago and John Manahan of Chatfield, and sister Mrs Fay McCarthy of Saint Charles. In addition to her husband she was preceded by one sister. The funeral was held on Monday at Saint Mary's Catholic church with Rev Frank Enright officiating. Arendt-Riley Funeral Home of 119 NW 2nd Avenue, Rochester in charge.

Biography* Frances M. Manahan McGlivra, 1895-1976:
Christened Margaret Frances by the Rev. Maddock, she began using her middle name Frances by the time she was in her teens. Charles Manahan (her father's brother?) was one of her christening sponsors. Her mother's sister Hanorah was the other sponsor. Frances was raised on farms in Elmira township, Olmsted County, Minnesota and in Chatfield township, Fillmore County. In 1920 at age 24, she was living with her parents and working as a clerk in a general store. In 1930, she was a lodger at 1900 Park Avenue in Minneapolis 5th ward and working as a stenographer in a general store. Later she worked as a bookkeeper. Frances was married to Robert Gilvra in the Rectory of Saint Stephen's Cathoilc church in Minneapolis by the Rev George Ryan before witnesses Mr/Mrs Robert Bredt. After the marriage she and Robert lived at 1920 3rd Avenue South (a 5-minute walk from the church). When husband Robert died in 1951, they were living at 136 Cecil.

Frances, 81, of 2910 E Franklin Ave, died on a Monday at North Memorial hospital in Robbinsdale, Hennepin County. Mrs Charles Theismann, 805 W 5th, Wabasha, Minnesota was informant on the death cert. Cause of death was perforated gastric stress ulcers and multiple traumatic injuries form a motor vehicular accident. An autopsy was performed by physician John I. Coe (MD), Medical Examiner, 730 S 7th Street Minneapolis. The accident occurred on 09 September 1976 at Hwy 55 and Douglas Drive, Golden Valley, Hennepin County, Minnesota. Frances was a passenger in an auto involved in collision with another vehicle. She was survived by brothers John Manahan of Chatfield and Lewis Manahan of Chicago, sisters Mrs William Dempsey of Chatfield and Mrs F. L. McCarthy of Saint Charles, nieces and nephews. The funeral was held on Thursday at Saint Albert the Great church. Frances was buried with her husband. Gleason Mortuary, 2650 Nicollet, Minneapolis was in charge.

Biography* Rosemary Manahan McCarthy, 1897-1984:
Rosemary parents were both first generation Irish-American. Her christening sponsors were William and Catherine Manahan (her father's brother and the brother's wife?). Rosemary grew up on farms in Elmira township, Olmsted County, Minnsota and Chatfield township, Fillmore County. She was a graduate of Bethlehem Academy in Faribault and completed one year at Mankato Business College. In 1930, she and her husband Fay owned a $3,700 house on Broad Street in Saint Charles, Winona County and operated a general store. Rosemary was a member of the Saint Charles Borromeo Catholic church Altar Society, the Catholic Daughters of America and was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Rosemary, 87, died on a Tuesday in Wabasha Nursing Home, 626 Shields Avenue, Wabasha, Minnesota. She had been a resident there for three-years. Rosemary's son-in-law Charles Theisman of Wabasha was the informant on the death cert. Cause of death was respiratory arrest, calchexia, organic brain syndrome and seizure disorder (post hip fracture 1980). Rosemary was attended by physician Scott M Jensen (MD) of Wabasha since 31 August 1981. She was survived by one son, three daughters, brothers John Manahan of Chatfield and Louis Manahan of Chicago, 12-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Two sisters preceded Rosemary in death. Her funeral was held on Thrusday at Saint Charles Borromeo in Saint Charles with the Rev. Lawrence Ginther officiating. Abbott-Wise Funeral Home of Wabasha was in charge.

Biography* Lewis Joseph Manahan, 1899-1989:
Christened Louis according to St. Mary's church record, his sponsors were his mother's 1st cousin and her husband. Lewis grew up on farms in Elmira township, Olmsted County, Minnesota and in Chatfield township, Fillmore County. He completed four-years of high school. When Lewis registered for the WWI draft in 1918, he was described as a man of medium height and slender build with blue eyes and light hair. Lewis was a farm laborer at least until 1920. By 1930, married and with two children, he and Lillian were renting, for $55.00/month, at 7847 Honore Street in the 18th ward of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Lewis was employed as a salesman for International Harvester Corp. His sister-in-law Florence Johnson was livng with them. In 1939, Lewis worked forty-weeks and earned wages of $2,250.00. By 1940, they owned a house at 11606 South Hale Avenue in the 19th ward. Lewis worked 60-hours the week-ending 30 March. He and Lillian now had four children. Lillian's sister was living with them. In 1942, Lewis registered for the World War II draft. He was 5ft-8in tall, weighed 168 pounds, had blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion and an appendectomy scar. Lewis was a member of Roseland Kiwanis. He was president of Chatham Coal & Coke Co, 356-111th Street, from 1948 to 1969 when he retired. After his first wife, Lillian, died in 1973, Lewis married her sister, Florence.

Lewis, 89, of 10001 South Claremont in Chicago, died on a Saturday at Little Company of Mary hospital in Evergreen Park, Cook County. He was survived by two daughters, one son, 11-grandchildren, a great-granddaughter, a brother John Manahan and a brother-in-law Bert Johnson. He was preceded by two wives, one son, three sisters, one son-in-law and one daughter-in-law. The funeral was held on Tuesday at Saint Barnabas Catholic church, 10134 South Longwood Drive. Laughlin Sons Funeral Home, 2100 West 95th Street, was in charge. Memorials to Kiwanis Crippled Childrens Fund appreciated.

Biography* John Martin Manahan, 1901-1999:
John's parents were both first generation Irish-Americans. His christening sponsors were Martin and Margaret Manahan (his father's brother and the brother's wife?). John grew up on farms in Elmira township, Olmsted County, Minnesota and in Chatfield township, Fillmore County. He was educated in local schools through the 8th grade. In 1930, married and with two sons, John and Dora were renting in Chatfield City, Olmsted County for $23/month. John was working as a miller at a feed mill. By 1940, he owned and operated the John Manahan Feed & Grain Company. The house, which they owned, was valued at $2,500. John registered for the World War II draft in 1942 at age 40. He was 6-feet inheight and weighed 160-pounds with hazel eyes, black hair and dark compexion. John had no physical characteristics that would aid in his identification. He filed for Social Security benefits in January 1964. John was a member of Saint Mary's Catholic church, a volunteer firefighter, and served on both the city council and the school board. He was also an avid fan of professional, college and high school sports.

John, 98, died on a Tuesday at Chosen Valley Care Center, 1102 Liberty Street, in Chatfield. He had been resident there since December 1992. John's son was informant on the death cert. Cause of death was broncho pneumonia (3-days), COPD (more than 10-years), dementia (more than 10-years). John was attended by physician Fred D. Banfield (MD) of 40 SE 16th Street, Rochester, Minnesota since 01 September 1987. He was survived by one son, one daughter, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. John was predeceased by his wife, one son, three sisters and one brother. The funeral was held on Saturday at Saint Mary's Catholic church in Chatfield with the Rev Dan Dernek officaiting. Riley Funeral Home was in charge.

Biography* William Sylvester Dempsey, 1892-1961:
William's father John was a first generation Irish-American born in Wisconsin, his mother Anna was a first generation Irish-American born in Minnesota. William was raised on a farm in Elmira township, Olmsted County that in 1900 was owned, free of mortgage, by his widowed paternal grandmother Mary Dempsey (who had immigrated in 1858). The second born and only son, William had an older sister and two younger ones. He received an 8th grade education, farmed in Elmira township and lived in the Chatfield area his entire life. In 1917/18 when William registered for the World War I draft, he was described as being of medium height and build with blue eyes and black Hair. In 1930, they owned their home but in 1940, they were living in a rented house for $10/month. Upon retirement from farming William and Vera moved into Chatfield City where he worked as a bulk oil truck driver until 1953 when he became a school bus driver for Chatfield dist until 1960. William was a member of Saint Mary's Catholic parish and of its Holy Name Society.

William, 68, died at his home at 528 Fillmore Street in Chatfield on a Friday. Cause of death was inanition and azotemia (several weeks) and carcinoma of prostate w/metastasis (3-years). He was attended by physician H. M. Skaug (MD) of Chatfield since January 1946. William was survived by his wife Vera, two daughters, a son, three sisters Mrs Joe Waby, Mrs Gerald Halloran and Mrs James McMahan all of Chatfield and two-grandchildren. His funeral was held on Monday at Saint Mary's Catholic church with Right Rev Monsignor William F. Coleman officiating. Pallbearers were Richard Chase, Dale Beckel, James Wheeler, Thomas McMahan, Richard Schindler and Stanley Manahan. Boetzer-Akeson Funeral Home was in charge.
