Biography* | Robert Edward Manley, 1908-1994: Robert was a bachelor farmer. He never married, he claimed, because every girl he ever liked - liked his brother Vernon better! Robert completed two-years of college. In 1940, he was living with his mother on the home farm in Sun Prairie township. He worked 90-hours the week-ending 31 March 1940. A 22-year-old lodger with Robert and his mother, worled on the farm and in 1939 was paid wages of $250. Robert died on a Wednesday, the day before his 86th birthday. |

Biography* | Vernon C. "Pat" Manley, 1903-1978: Vernon operated the family farm at 2144 County Hwy T, Sun Prairie with his brother Robert for his entire life. He attended Oshkosh State Teachers College for one-year. Vernon later served variously as clerk, assessor and chairman of Sun Prairie Township and as a member of the town hall district school board. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau Farmers Union and the Modern Woodman of America. In 1930, Vernon and Mae did not own a radio. In 1940, he and Mae owned a house on the home farm valued at $1,500. Vernon, 74, died on a Saturday. He was survived by his 2nd wife Emma, one son, two daughters, one step-daughter, one brother, Robert, three sisters, Mrs Kathryn (Wilbur) Sachtjen of Madson, Mrs Pearl (Clement) Schwingle of Elm Grove and Mrs Genevieve (Peter) Nelson of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 18 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Vernon was preceded in death by his first wife Mae and one sister Mrs Ruth (Arnold) Kroncke. Funeral services were held at Sacred Hearts on Tuesday and were officated by Rev. Anthony Karls. |

Biography* | Kathryn Manley Sachtjen, 1900-2001 : Kathryn was the second child of seven and the eldest of four daughters. She completed three-years of college and in 1921, resided in Beloit, Rock County, Wisconson where she worked as a school teacher. Kathryn lived in Madison from the 1920s into the 1990s. In 1930, she and her husband Wilbur owned a $9,000 house at 1237 Elizabeth Street in Madison's 2nd ward. In 1940, the house was valued at $6,500. Kathryn taught in the Madison public schools for 20-years. Earlier she had taught in other communities including a year in Hawaii. Kathryn was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, was a charter member of the Madison Chapter of Alpha Delta Kapp, the National Teachers Professional Society. Kathryn was past president of Lapham School PTA. Later she spent winters in Florida and summers in Sun Prairie. Kathryn, 101, of Colonial View Apartments, Sun Prairie, died on a Monday at Middleton Village Nursing Home after brief illness. She was survived by a son, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren and sisters Mrs C. J. Schwingle of Naples, Florida and Mrs Peter A Nelson of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Kathryn was preceded by her husband Wilbur in 1971 and a son in 1987. The funeral was held on Friday at Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary Catholic Church, 227 Columbus Street, Sun Prairie with Rev Bart Timmerman officiating. In lieu of flowers, it was suggested that donations be made to one's favorite charity in Kathryn's name. Tuschen-Newcomer Funeral Home, Sun Prairie was in charge. |

Biography* | Ruth Manley Kroncke, 1901-1970: Ruth was the third child of seven and the second daughter. She completed two-years of college and taught at the Sherman School for 20 years. In 1939, Ruth worked for 37-weeks and earned $765. In 1930, she and husband George rented at 306 Norris Court in Madison's 7th ward. In 1940, they owned an $8,000 house in Sun Prairie Village. They moved back to Madison circa 1950. Ruth was a member of Saint Bernard's Parish, the Wisconsin and National Education Associations, and the Retired Teacher's Association. She was also a charter member and past president of the Madison Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, a national teachers' professional society. Ruth, 68, died on a Monday. She was survived by her husband, one son, one daughter, three sisters Mrs W P Sachtjen of 2215 N Sherman Ave, Mrs C J Schwingle of Elm Grove and Mrs P A Nelson of Lamont, IL, two brothers Vernan and Robert of Marshall, and five grandchildren. Her funeral was held on Thursday at Sacred Hearts in Sun Prairie. Tuschen Funeral Home was in charge. |

Biography* | Pearl G. Manley Schwingle, 1902-2008: The fourth of seven children and the third daughter, Pearl was raised on a farm in Sun Prairie township, Dane County, Wisconsin. She completed four-years of college graduating from the University of Wisconsinin 1928 and became a school teacher. By 1921, Pearl had left the home farm and was living in Muscoda in Grant County. There she met her future husband Clement Schwingle. Married in 1923, by 1930 they were renting at 1651 Oakland Avenue in Sherwood Village, Milwaukee County. In 1940, they rented at 1234 Laurelton Parkway in Teaneck, New Jersey. By 1944, they were living in Elm Grove, Waukesha County, Wisconsin. Pearl's husband Clement died in 1978 and by 1944, she was living in Brookfield, Wisconsin. In 1999, she was living in Florida. Pearl was a member of the Marquette University Women's Council, of Saint Mary's Church in Elm Grove and St. William's Church, Naples, Florida. Pearl had been a member of Blue Mound Golf and Country Club and Moorings Country Club in Naples. Pearl traveled extensively, loved golf and bridge, was devoted to her family, and was the number one fan of the Milwaukee Brewers. Pearl, 106, of Naples, Florida and formerly of Elm Grove, Wiscconsin died on a Wednesday at Brookfield Gardens in Brookfield, Wisconsin. She was survived by two daughters, 11-grandchildren, 25-great-grandchildren and sister Genevieve "Dody" Nelson of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The funeral was held Saturday at Saint Mary's Visitation Church in Elm Grove. Pearl was buried orivately with her husband. Memorial contributions to Marquette University were suggested. Becker Ritter Funeral Home of Brookfield was in charge. "Pearl ... kissed the Blarney Stone and walked the Great Wall of China - what a life!" |

In 1999, Dody was dividing her time between Fort Lauderdale, Florida in winter and Sun Prairie in summer. Dody died on a Monday at the ripe-old-age of 104. |
