Biography* | Thomas Galvin, 1839-1864: Born in Drumwood townland, Solohead parish, County Tipperary in 1835 or -36. There is a gap in the Solohead church records for the years 1829 to 1837 so no record of his christening survives. Thomas probably came to the United States in late 1855 or early 1856. The first evidence of him in the U.S.A. is in August 1856 when he was a sponsor for the christening of nephew Cornelius Manley. He was also a sponsor for the christening of nephew William Mulcahy in 1859. In 1860, he was living with his sister and her husband, Dennis Mulcahy and Catherine Galvin, in the fourth ward of Hudson, New York. Thomas' Final Papers for United States citizenship were dated 26 Oct 1861. His 1862 marriage was witnessed by William Galvin (a cousin?) and Bridget Hogan. In 1863, Thomas was a christening sponsor for the third time, for nephew Thomas McCarty. Thomas Galvin, about 28, accidentally drowned on a Friday and was buried in the Hudson City Cemetery. The photograph was taken with his sister Margaret Galvin Dolan on an unknown date at Forshew's in Hudson, New York. It was found in the attic of the Thomas McCarthy (1863-1936) home farm in Sun Prairie Township by Isabel Almond McCarthy. Family lore attributed the photo to Thomas' brother Patrick. Based on what we know about birth years of the Galvin brothers this seems unlikely. |

Biography* | William Mulcahy, 1859-1929: The eldest of eleven, William was christened at Saint Mary's in Hudson, New York on 20 February 1859. He was sponsored by his uncle Thomas Galvin and by Johanna Dwyer. William is not listed with his parents in 1880 and has not been found anyplace else either. In 1884, when he marries Alice Goodman, he is living in Guthrie County, Iowa. Their first child together - his wife Alice had at least one child by a previous marriage - is born in Guthrie County. In 1890, their son William is born in Baraboo, Sauk County, Wisconsin. In 1896, William bought a farm with mortgage in Section 17 of Dane township, Dane County, Wisconsin from M/M Theodore Nettekoven. William and Alice sold this farm to his brother Dennis on 1 October 1902. In 1913, William applied for a homestead in Gem township, Bowman County, North Dakota. He and wife Alice were living on this farm, about 14-miles southwest of Bowman village, in 1920. William, 70, died on a Friday at the home of his son William in Amor township, Bowman County, North Dakota. He had moved into his son's home about a month previously due to poor health. The funeral was held on Tuesday from Saint Charles Catholic church with the Rev. Krank officiating. William was buried in the church cemetery next to his wife who died 3-years earlier. According to his obit, William was survived by three brothers and one sister (unnamed) of Dane, WI and the one son. He actually was survived by five brothers and two sisters, one son, one daughter and one step-daughter. Undertaker J. H. Kvalueso, Bowman, North Dakota was in charge of arrangements. |

Biography* | Dennis Mulcahy, 1862-1936: Dennis Mulcahy's death record, obituary, and tombstone all list his birth year as 1859. The death record and obituary list his birthplace as Buffalo, New York. Wife Sara was the informant for the death record and presumably was also the source for the obit. However, there is other, more substantial, evidence that Dennis was born near Hudson, New York in 1862. The third child of eleven and the second son of Dennis Mulcahy and Catherine Galvin, Dennis was christened on 8 June 1862 at Saint Mary's Catholic church in Hudson. The church christening records list his birth date as 1 June 1962 although it's certainly possible the birth date was 05 June as listed elsewhere. After their 1909 marriage, Dennis and Sara lived on a farm near Dane. Circa 1912, they moved to Clifton in Monroe County where they lived for nineteen years before returning to a farm near Dane. In the fall of 1935 they returned, once again, to Clifton. Dennis, 73, died suddenly and unexpectedly of a stroke at his home in Clifton on a Monday evening. He was survived by his wife Sara, one daughter Mrs Martin Hein of Dane, four brothers Dan and Thomas of Dane, David of Verona and Stephen of South Dakota; and two sisters Mrs John Hyslop of Dane and Mrs Joe Norwalk of South Dakota; plus several nieces and nephews. Dennis ws preceded by his parents, brothers John, William and Patsy and a sister Johanna who died in infancy. The funeral was held at Saint Aloysius Catholic church in Sauk City on Thursday with Rev. Buckle officiating. |

She supported herself and her two children as a laundress and domestic servant. Although her son Patrick, her son's wife Ellen, her brother-in-law William Fitzgerald and other Galvin descendents and relatives are buried in the Hudson Cemetery, there is no evidence that Ellen Foley and her sister Mary are. Biography* | Patrick Galvin, 1863-1898: Patrick was christened on 19 September 1863 at Saint Mary's in Hudson. His sponsors were his uncle William Galvin and Catherine Clancy. In 1870 and 1875, he and his widowed mother were living with his aunt and uncle, Mary and William Fitzgerald. Patrick, 35, died on a Saturday. Hudson cemetery records list him as single but that may be incorrect, although his death notice in the local paper does not mention that he is married. There is a married Ellen Galvin born Ireland circa 1862 buried in the same lot as this Patrick. This Ellen's obituary lists her as the widow of Patrick Galvin, that she lived and was employed at the Hudson Orphans Asylum and that she has a married daughter, Mrs William White, living in Hudson. However, this woman is listed in the 1900 census as Mary E Downing, born in New York, married to Eugene Downing and with a daughter Ethel M (who in 1907 married William White). Which doesn't fit since Patrick Galvin died two-years before! |

Biography* | Daniel McCarty, ca1780-before1855: The only evidence we have of his given name Daniel is the inscription on his son Eugene's tombstone - "son of Daniel and Margaret McCarthy". Don't know when or where Daniel died. His wife Margaret is listed as a widow in the 1855 New York state census of Columbia County. Margaret has been there, in the Town of Claverack, for five years. There is no tombstone for Daniel in the Hudson city cemetery where wife Margaret and others in the family are buried. There is also an implication from son John having named his first son Daniel which would have been in keeping with the tradition of naming the first son after the father's father. In the 1880 census, all four of Daniel's living children listed their father's birthplace as Ireland. According to family lore of a family member in Hudson, New York, two McCarthy brothers went "west". We know that son John went to Wisconsin circa 1864 and is the only known McCarthy male of the family that didn't live out his alloted years in Columbia County. A son, as yet unidentified, could have been born before John, or between John & Eugene, or between Eugene & Margaret. Besides, its curious that there is no son Daniel. If the unknown son was ever in Columbia County, New York he left no trace there. |

Biography* | Margaret McCarthy, 1784-1862: On 1 June 1855, Margaret, age 70, was living in the Town of Claverack, Columbia County, New York. She was a widowed head-of-household and all seven of her known children were living with her. Her oldest child was listed at age 35 and her youngest at 22. Using these ages, Margaret was 35 when her oldest was born and 48 when her youngest was born. It's possible that she delivered her first born before age 35 and that there were other, older, children. Its also possible that Margaret was older than the age listed in the 1855 census although that age matches well with her listed age at death. In 1860, she was living in Hudson's fourth ward with her daughter and son-in-law Margaret and Thomas Sullivan. Margaret, about the age of 78, died on a Saturday of marasmus. [Marasmus is a condition of malnourishment most comon in children. In the elderly, if there is no unerlying known medical known cause, it is often the result of depression.] |

Biography* | Margaret McCarthy Sullivan, ca1826-1900: Born about 1826 in Ireland, Margaret immigrated to the Town of Claverack in Columbia County, New York circa 1850. She came to Claverack, with her mother and several of her siblings, two years after her older brother John. After her 1854 marriage, Margaret and husband Thomas continued to live with her mother in Claverack. In 1856, she and her husband moved to 330 State Street in Hudson's fourth ward. In 1860, her mother Margaret and her brother Eugene were lving with them. Margaret and Thomas had six children only two of whom survived them. She had a will prepared which she marked on 5 June 1900. In the will, Margaret left the easterly half of the 50 ft x 120 ft lot at 330 State Street, including the house theron, to son Patrick. The westerly half of the lot she left to son John. Margaret, about 74, died on a Saturday night at her home after an illness of six weeks. She was survived by her two sons. The funeral was held on Saturday from her house and then from Saint Mary's. Her will was approved for probate on 31 July 1900. |
