Her mother born in Wisconsin, was a first generation Bavarian-American. Melia was the third child of ten and the eldest of four daughters. According to family lore, daughter Josephine was born out of wedlock and although the child was adopted by Con Manley, he is not believed to have been her biological father. Melia married for a second time after Con died in 1933. This marriage is not recorded in Dane County. This second husband, "Jack", allegedly squandered the money Melia received from the sale of the farm. At a later date, Melia was seen waiting tables in a restaurant somewhere in the Dells resort area. Melia, about 69, died on a Sunday. |

Biography* | Mary Conway Manley, 1870-1956: The first of two daughters born to Irish parents, Mary was raised on a farm. In 1895, she married Charles Manley of Dane County. J. F. Bower performed the ceremony. Witnesses were Michael Manley (the groom's brother) and Nora Conway (the bride's sister). How they met isn't known but Charles had two sisters that lived in Rock County so presumably he met Mary when he visited his sisters from time-to-time. After Charles died in 1899, Mary continued to operate the Sun Prairie township farm in partnership with her brother-in-law Con Manley. By 1910, she and her two children had moved into a purchased house in Sun Prairie Village. Located at 97 Jones Street, the house was valued at $4,000 in 1930. She did not own a radio at that time. In 1935, Mary was living in Waupun, Wisconsin, presumably with or near son Harold. By 1940, she was living with her daughter and son-in-law in Detroit Michigan. By 1948, Mary was back in Waupun. Mary, 85, of 165 Cherry Street, Janesville, Wisconsin, died on a Monday in Mercy Hospital. For the past 14-years she resided in the Clem Com___ Home in Janesville (according to her obit although one source says she lived in Waupun, Wisconsin in 1948). Surviving were one son, Harold Manley of Waupun; one grandson, nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded by her husband, a daughter Mrs Helen O'Leary and a sister Mrs Bert Heffernan of Janesville. The funeral was held Wednesday at Saint Patrick's church. The Kimball-Nelson Funeral Home was in charge. |
