Biography* | Alice Goodman Martin Mulcahy, 1856-1926: There are several unanswered questions about Alice Goodman. Born in New York to a mother also born in New York and a father born in either New York or Pennsylvania, Alice was married first to George Martin. The union of Alice Goodman and George Martin produced at least one, and possibly two, offspring. The known offspring was born in Colorado in 1878. In 1884, Alice was living in Guthrie County, Iowa when she was married to William Mulcahy by Minister J. Heslwood. How did Alice come to be in Iowa? And what happened to first husband, George Martin? In 1885, Alice and William Mulcahy are listed in the city of Stuart in Guthrie County but no children are listed. Where was the Colorado born daughter who would have been six-years-old? Further, when daughter Alice is born later in that year, she is listed as the mother's first! In 1900, Alice and William are listed in Dane County, Wisconsin with the three known children. However, Alice is listed as having four-children - all living. Since Alice and William were married in 1884, any legitimate children would be fifteen or less and would be likely living with the family. Mayhaps the fourth child was a Martin and had already left home? Alice, 69, died at her winter home in Bowman, North Dakota on a Tuesday. She and husband William had left the farm in Gem township for the winter - and in an early version of 'snowbirding' had moved from the farm into the nearest village! Her funeral was held on Thursday from Saint Charles Catholic church with burial in the church cemetery. Alice was survived by one son William jr on the home farm and two daughters Mrs Maud Mulcahy of Madison and Mrs Alice Forgor of Detroit, Michigan. If there were four children, then one child must have predeceased her. |
