In 1900, John's family, including his parents and a younger brother, was renting in the second ward of Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana. John's father Thomas, a teamster and of the Catholic faith, was a first generation Irish-American whose father was born in either Maryland or Kentucky and whose mother was born in Ireland. John's mother Julia was born in Indiana of Indiana born parents. John completed two-years of high school and at the age of 17 enlisted in the U.S.Navy. His first duty was aboard an old coal burning torpedo boat. In 1914 John was aboard the USS Salem that was sent to Vera Cruz, Mexico by President Wilson who had ordered the port taken following trouble with Mexico. After that he served on the USS New Jersey and went into the World War zone in 1917. That same year in November John's ship and crew captured the German submarine U-58 with a crew of 24 off the coast of Ireland. After the war, he came to South Dakota and farmed with his widowed father in Hanover township, South Dakota. But now a confirmed "salt", John returned to the Navy and went to the far east where he was on duty during the war between Turkey and Greece in 1921 and 1922; serving also during the days of the Russian revolution. After 16 years of active duty, John was transferred to the fleet reserve. He returned to South Dakota and began farming and ranching. In 1925, John was living in Hanover township again. After his marriage in 1927, John changes religions from Catholic to Lutheran. By 1930, John and family were living in Township 07 North/Range 24 East in Haakon County on a farm that they owned. His wife Stella died in 1935 and the following year John married Catherine Mulcahy. In 1939, he worked 48-weeks, earned $150 and had other income. When the US entered WWII in 1941 he immediately answered a summons from the Navy to instruct men at Navy Pier, Chicago.
