Biography* | Helen E. Cross Mulcahy, 1895-1988: Helen was the first of five children born to Jerome Cross, born in Ohio, and Mary Horn, born in Pennsylvania. In 1900, the family was living in Winthrop, Buchanan County, Iowa in a house they owned free of mortgage. The Jerome was working as a day laborer and had been unemployed for three-months in the year ending 01 June 1900. In 1908, they moved to Meade County, South Dakota. By 1910, the parents had divorced and the mother Mary was operating a farm in an un-named township (T9N/R11E) west of Stoneville. She owned the farm free. One child had died and the remaining four were living with their mother. In1912, Helen married Stephen Mulcahy at Stoneville and the same year they moved to Dane Wisconsin. In 1917, Helen and family moved back to South Dakota and homesteaded north of Midland. In 1955, they moved into Midland and after her husband Stephen died in 1956 Helen moved to Rapid City. She was a member of the Midland Catholic Church and Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rapid City. Helen, 93, died on a Wednesday. Among her survivors were three daughters: Catherine Gates Jasmann of Rapid City, Dorothy Westlund of Pierre, and Margaret Moore of Santa Monica, California; and one son James of Sunnyvale, California. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters, two sons and one daughter. |

Biography* | Catherine C. Mulcahy Gates Jassmann, 1913-2008: The eldest of seven children, Catherine was about five-years-old when the family moved from Dane County in Wisconsin to Haakon County in South Dakota. In 1930, they lived on a farm in an unnamed township designated T07/R24 (more precisely described as Township 07 North of Range 24 East of the Black Hills prime meridian). She completed four-years of high school. In 1936, Catherine, a Catholic, married John Gates, a Lutheran widower with two children who lived in the same township. Her husband died in 1944 and in 1945 Catherine lived on the home farm with her two step-children. |

Biography* | Mary Helen Mulcahy Buchholz, 1917-1972: Mary was born the third of nine children and the second of four daughters. By 1920, the family had moved from Dane County, Wisconsin to Haakon County, South Dakota. Mary completed a high school education. She was married to Albert Buchholz in 1941 by Justice-of-the-Peace A. F. Miles. At the time, Mary and Albert were both living in Mobridge, Walworth County, South Dakota. By 1945, she and Albert were living in Midland in Haakon County. They then operated in restaurant in Quinn, Pennington County before moving to Rapid City in 1950. There Mary managed Allards Salad Bowl. The couple lived at 1709 West Omaha. Mary, 55, and husband Albert both died in the Rapid City flood of Friday 09 June 19725. Mary was survived by one daughter and seven grandchildren all of Rapid City. She was also survived by her mother Helen Mulcahy of Rapid City, one brother James and sisters: Dorothy Westlund, Margaret Moore, and Catherine Jassman. Mary was predeceased by her father in 1956. Graveside services for Mary and Albert were held at Black Hills National cemetery on Friday with Rev John Corry officiating. Catron Blvd Chapel was in charge. |
