Biography* | Evelyn Martin Heeney, 1895-1925: Evelyn was a first generation Irish-American. She was born the second child of four and had one younger brother. Christened Margaret Evelyn Martin, she was known as Evelyn by the time she was in her 20's. Evelyn was employed for many years as a sales clerk at the Guernsey and Terry Store. Evelyn, 30, died on a Monday thirty-three days after her child was born. Her funeral was held on Thursday from the home of her parents at 304 State Street and then from Saint Mary's. Her cousin, the Rev. John King, was the celebrant of the solemn mass. Three other priests including, the Rev. William Keefe, Pastor of Saint Mary's, assisted. Mrs Marion McDonald played the organ and Miss Beatrice Soule sang. Pall bearers were Mark Arkison, George Weinmann, Daniel Sullivan, Neal Garvey, George Dolan, and William Howe. The Guernsey and Terry Store was closed until noon that day. The proprietor, john Loos, and all of the employees attended the funeral. |

Biography* | John Paul Martin, 1909-1974: John, a first generation Irish-American, was the youngest of four children and the only son. John was well-known in Hudson basketball circles having been the captain of a Saint Mary's team that defeated archrival Hudson High School. He later was a member of the Columbia County Basketball Hall of Fame Committee. In 1930, living with his parents at 304 State Street in Hudson's 4th ward, John was a bookkeeper at Lone Star Cement Company. He had joined Lone Star the previous year and rose to the position of credit manager. At one time he was division treasurer in Albany, New York and later, in 1974, was Credit Manager of New York Traprock, a subsidiary of Lone Star Industries. He lived in New City, New York and then Bardonia in Rockland County. John, 65, died unexpectedly on a Tuesday at the Nyack (New York) Hospital. He was survived by one son. |

Biography* | James M. King, 1888-1961: James was born the eldest of five with one sister. He grew up in Hudson but left for greener pastures after 1910. In 1921, he was living at 600 West 192nd Street in New York City. He joined the New York City Police Department and in 1930, widowed, he and his daughter were living with his mother at 1424 Shakespeare Avenue (a duplex) in the Bronx, New York. In 1940, married again, James, his wife Sadie, and his daughter were living with his brother Paul at the same Bronx address. James was a detective in the New York Police Department. He worked 48-hours in the week-ending 31 March 1940 and in 1939 he worked 52-weeks and earned $3,000. When James retired, he was a detective in the Chief Inspector's office. James was a life member of the Hudson Council Knights of Columbus and a member of the Hudson Lodge of Elks. He was also a member of the Captain Edward Grant Post, American Legion, Bronx, New York. James, 73, died on a Monday at his home in the Bronx. He was survived by his second wife Sadie and one daughter both of the Bronx, one brother Paul and one sister Mary Alice both of Hudson. His funeral, arranged by Cooks Funeral Home in the Bronx, was held on Thursday at Saint Margaret's, 260th and Riverdale Avenue, in the Bronx. |

Biography* | Rev. John Joseph King, 1890-1956: John was born the second of five children with one younger sister. He was widely noted as an athelete in his youth. John was a basketball and baseball star at Saint Mary's Academy and later played both of those sports at Niagara University. John entered the seminary at Niagara and was ordained on 14 June 1919 after 5-years of college. He was athletic director of the Albany diocese for many years and served at Saint Paul of the Apostles in Troy, New York for 13 years. John left Troy, New York after 1935 and served as chaplain at the New York State Coxsackie Vocational School in Greene County, then at Saint Lucy's in Altamont, Albany County. In 1940, he lived rent free at 112 Park Street in Altamont which 1s two blocks west of the church at 113 Grand Street. John worked 84-hours the week-ending 31 Narch 1940. In 1939, he worked for 26-weeks, earned $1,200 and had other income. John was pastor of Our Lady of Mercy in Albany beginning in 1946. Reverand John, 66, died on a Friday at Saint Vincent's Hospital in New York City. He was survived by two brothers and one sister. |

When Mary's brother died in 1956, she was living in Albany, New York. By 1961 she was back in Hudson at 4 Union Turnpike, her brother Paul's address. Mary, 75, died on a Sunday at Saint Peter's Hospital in Albany. She was survived by one niece and one sister-in-law Mrs James King both of Toledo, Ohio. Funeral services were held on Wednesday from McDonald's Funeral Home and then from Saint Mary's. |

Paul's mother, Margaret Martin, didn't have any sisters named Mary but she did have two brothers that married Marys. Her brother John Martin married Mary Shea and brother Daniel Martin married Mary Kennedy. Both brothers lived in Hudson. In 1920, Paul and his sister Mary were living with their uncle Daniel Martin in the 4th ward of Hudson. Paul was working as an electrician for the railroad. In 1930, he was living with his mother at 1424 Shakespeare Avenue in the Bronx, New York and working as a New York City fireman. In 1940 Paul was listed as the head of family at the same address. The family consisted of, in addition to himself, his mother Margaret, his sister Mary, his brother James, James wife Sadie and James daughter. Paul was a Lieutenant in the New York Fire Department. After his retirement he moved back to Hudson. There he served as secretary of the Hudson Civil Service Commission and worked as manager of the Columbia Wine and Liquor Store. Paul lived at 4 Union Turnpike. He was a Third and Fourth Degree member of Hudson Council 316, Knights of Columbus and a member of Hudson Lodge of Elks. Paul, 72, died on a Saturday at Columbia Memorial Hospital. He was survived by one sister Mary of Hudson, one niece, and one sister-in-law Mrs James King both of Toledo, Ohio. Paul was predeceased by his parents John King and Margaret Martin, his wife Alice Coleman, his brothers James, William and Rev John. Funeral services were held on Tuesday from the McDonald's Funeral Home and then from Saint Mary's. |

She was survived by one son, one daughter, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Alice was preceeded in death by her husband and one grandson. Her funeral was held on Wednesday at Saint Mary's in Hudson. Memorials to Pine Haven Home, Sunshine Fund, Rte 217, Philmont 12565 were suggested. Bates and Anderson Funeral Home of Hudson was in charge. |

These are three of the more obvious possibilites: She is not listed in the census; She is listed by an unknown married name; She is listed by her maiden name, divorced or unwed, and her child does not live with her. Mary, probably 59-or-60 years old, died at home on a Thursday following an illness of eight days. Mary was survived by her husband, two sisters, two brothers, and one daughter. Her funeral was held on Monday from her home and then from Saint Mary's. |

Later she worked at the local office of the New York & New England Lime & Cement Company. Following her marriage in 1920 she moved to New York City where her husband was employed by the New York Police Department. Elizabeth, 33, died on a Thursday at the home of her parents, 736 State Street, Hudson after a protracted illness. She was survived by her husband, one daughter, her parents, and three sisters. Her funeral was held on Saturday from her parent's home and then from Saint Mary's. |
