Biography* | Harold Andrew Manley, 1896-1980: Harold was a man of medium height and build with brown eyes and black hair. He served in the United States Army during World War I. After the war, Harold worked in a factory repairing plows. In 1930, he, his wife, and son were living with Harold's mother in Sun Prairie. Harold was working as a cost clerk in a factory. He moved from Sun Prairie to Waupun in the early 1930s where he was a member of Saint Joseph's Catholic Church. Harold was employed as a guard at Waupun State Prison for thirty years before retiring in 1962. In 1939, he worked for 52-weeks and earned $1,260. He also had other income. In 1940, Harold and Gertrude were renting at 241 Walker Street in Waupun's 3rd ward for $28/month. In 1942, he registered for the World War II draft. Harold, 83, died on a Friday at the Dodge County Community Health Center in Juneau. He was survived by his wife Gertrude, and a son. Harold was preceded in death by one son and a sister. The funeral service was held on Monday from Kohls Funeral Home in Waupun with the Rev Simeon Yates officiating. |

Biography* | Evelyn E Reiser Mulcahy Midthun, 1916-2001: In 1920, Evelyn was the eldest of two and the only daughter. Both of her parents were born in Wisconsin and they were farming in Troy township, Sauk County, Wisconsin. She was married in 1937 to Daniel Mulcahy who died in 1941. Evelyn was married for a second time to Eldon Midthun who died in 1987. [NOTE: Two of Eldon's sisters, Carrie and Gertrude, married Mulcahy men who were brothers of Evelyn's first husband.] Evelyn was a member of 1st United Church of Christ. Evelyn, 85, of Sauk City, died on a Friday at Sauk Prairie Memorial hospital of emphysema. She was survived by five sons and four daughters, 12-grandchildren and 11-great grandchildren. She was preceded by a brother Russel Reiser in addition to two husbands. The funeral was held on Monday with Pastor Robert Rieke officiating. Gnewikow-Hooverson Funeral Home of Sauk City was in charge. "Thank you Mom, for loving us." |

Biography* | Carrie Midthun Mulcahy, 1915-2009: Carrie was the third child born to a Norwegian father and a Wisconsin born, 1st generation, German-American mother. In 1900, Carrie's father Thomas was single and farming in Westport, Dane County. By 1910, he was married and raising tobacco on a rented farm in Dane township. By 1920, the family owned their farm with mortgage. In 1937, Carrie married Steve Mulcahy who preceded her in death in 1982. Carrie lived and farmed with her husband in the Dane area for many years. Her favorite pastime was baking and cooking, and sharing those gifts with her children, grandchildren, and extended family. She was a lifelong member of Dane Immanuel United Church of Christ. Carrie, age 93, died on a Friday at the Good Samaritan Center in Lodi surrounded by her family. Survivors included six children, 18-grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marion Nordness, Gertrude Mulcahy and Phyllis (Don) Bradley; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Steven; son, Jack Mulcahy; grandchildren, Karen Hovey and Mark Mulcahy; brothers, Eldon, Gerald, Thomas, Ferdinand and Oliver Midthun; sister, Annie Moran; brothers-in-law, George Mulcahy, Francis Nordness and Bill Moran; and sisters-in-law, Carol Midthun and Evelyn Midthun. Funeral services were held on Tuesday at Dane Immanuel United Church of Christ, 300 North Military Road in Dane. The Rev. Denise Cole presided. The Winn-Cress Funeral Home in Waunakee was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family expressed thanks to Dr. Tom Sullivan and the staff at Lodi Good Samaritan for the wonderful care of their mother. "The soul cannot see a rainbow if we don't have tears." |

Biography* | Robert Schimming, 1881-1958: Robert was a first generation German-American and was educated through the 8th-grade. In 1900, he and an older brother were living on the home farm in Fitchburg township, Dane County, Wisconsin. In 1930, Robert and wife Gladys were farming in Fitchburg and owned their home. He worked 70-hours in the week-ending 31 March 1940. Robert, 77, died on a Sunday. |

Biography* | John (Johannes) Herman Kayartz, 1919-1995: John immigrated in 1923 with his parents, Herman and Emma, two-older sisters and two-younger brothers. They left Hamburg, Germany on 17 November 1923 on the "SS Minnekahda". They arrived in the Port of New York on 01 December bound for Wessington, South Dakota. His father Herman, a tailor by profession, had served on the German side during World War I. In 1925 the family was living at 812 North Duff in the 4th ward of Mitchell, Davison County, South Dakota. By 1930, the family had moved to Wisconsin and was renting at 209 Adams Street in the second ward of Portage in Columbia, Wisconsin. John's father Herman was a tailor in a clothing store. In 1939, John worked for 26-weeks delivering groceries for a grocery store and earned $260. In 1940, he worked 56-hours the week-ending 31 March. John served in the U. S. Army, Company F, 1939-1945, during World War II. Afterwards, he worked for the Columbia County Highway Department for 20 years before retiring in 1985. He sang with the Barber Shop Quartet and the Barber Shoppers. He enjoyed sports and liked to fish. A resident of Pacific Township, John died on a Wednesday at Divine Savior Hospital in Portage. He was 75. John was survived by his wife Margaret, one daughter, three sons, nine grandchildren, one step-grandson, two brothers, and one sister. His funeral was held on Saturday at Saint Mary's Catholic church in Portage with Rev. Thomas Fitzgerald officiating. |
