Biography* | Pearl Rippy Eckert, 1919-2008: Born as Lena Pearl, she was known Pearl. From Maunie, White County, Illinois, she was living in 1940 at 1816 West Jackson Blvd in Chicago's 27th ward. Pearl and two other ladies were renting an apartment in the six-unit building for $20/month. One unit was occupied by the owner and the five rentals ranged from $20-to-$30 per month. Pearl, who graduated Harrisburg High School in Maunie and Metropolitan Business College in Chicago, was working as a clerk in an insurance office. In 1939, Pearl worked 52-weeks and earned $660. Her two room-mates worked as waitresses. Pearl then held a secretarial position in the Chicago offices of Movie-Radio Guide magazine. In 1941, Pearl was married to Elmer Eckert at her sister and brother-in-law's home in Bloomington, Illinois by Dr George Martin of the Bloomington Presbyterian church. Pearl's sister and Lieutenant Norman Riopel of Pekin, Illinois, an associate of the groom's, were witnesses. After a brief trip, the newlyweds made their home at 504 North Washington in Tullahoma, Tennessee. Later, they lived in Elmhurst, Illinois. Pearl, 88, died on a Friday. Her husband of 66-years died two-days-later. They were survived by three children, eight grandchildren and two-great-grandchildren. Services and cremation were private. A joint memorial service for Pearl and Elmer was held on Saturday, 21 June at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 235 South Kenilworth, Elmhurst. Biography* | John James DeFazio, 1908-1982: John, a first generation Italian-American, was the oldest of six children with two younger brothers. His mother Antonia had two daughters by a previous marriage, so John also had two-older step-sisters, surname Torriano, the oldest born in Italy. John's father Dominic immigrated circa 1894, was an illiterate naturalized citizen of the United States, and worked as a laborer most of his working life. However, by 1900, Dominic owned a duplex on 58 Avenue West in Duluth, Minnesota, free of mortgage, and rented the other half. By 1910, the family lived at 1106 3rd Street West. A house they owned. In 1940, the house was valued at $2,000. John completed grade school and in 1930, was working as a rackman in a pool hall. In 1940, 31, single and still lving with his parents, John was working as a water tender in a boiler room. In 1939, he worked 50-weeks, earned wages of $1,440 and had no other income. In 1960, John and Kathryn were living in Apartment C at 216 North 14th Avenue. John retired as a stationary engineer from U. S. Steel's former Duluth works. He was a World War II Army veteran, a member of Saint Peter's parish and the David Wisted-Zenith City American Legion post. John, 73, a widower, of 1106 West Third Street, Duluth, died at Saint Lukes hospital in Duluth on a Tuesday. His sister Mary DeFazio of the same address was informant on the death cert. Cause of death was mycardial failure (1-day)/myocardial infarction (3-wks)/coronary artery disease/chronic bronchitis. He was attended by physician John Dwyer of 1017 Eest 1st Street in Duluth. John was survived by four-sisters Seraphine Peterson and Mary DeFazio of Duluth, Clara (Robert) Springer of Columbus, Ohio and Dorothy (Fred) Sahlberg of Lake Nebagamon, Wisconsin; and two-brothers Nicholas A and Michael J of Duluth. The funeral was held on Friday at Saint Peters Catholic church with Rev. James Crossman officiating. Dougherty Funeral Home of 600 East 2nd Street, Duluth was in charge. |
