James' christening sponsors were Michael Ryan and Julia Delaney (mother's sister?). He remained on the home farm in Cronavone his entire life. James was educated well enough to sign his name. He had no Irish. James married twice. His first wife, Margaret Dwyer of Gorteennamona in Clonoulty parish, died in childbirth. His second wife was Margaret Kennedy of Glastrigan in Templederry parish.

In 1901, there were 14 people living in the 5-room Delaney house in Cronavone: James, his wife, their seven children, his father, his mother, and three servants. There also were 5 out-buildings on the farm: stable, cow house, calf house, piggery, and shed. The townland included 7 other dwelling houses, each house occupied by one family. There were a total of 69-people in the townland, 36 males, and 33 females - all Catholic and a total of 24 out-buildings. Only one other farm had as many as 5 out-buildings and only one had a barn. The surnames of the holders were: Hanley, Martin, Ryan (3), Kennedy (2), and Delaney.

In 1911, the house was described as having an additional room (6 total). There are 10 people listed: himself, wife, seven children, and one servant. There are 10 out buildings (5 have been added since 1901): stable, coach house, 2 cow houses, calf house, dairy, piggerys (2), barn, and shed. There were 8 other dwelling houses in the townland (one more than in 1901). There are 66-people in the townland, 32 males and 34 females, all Catholic. There are total of 64 out-buildings, one lot has 12 out-buildings and three have 10. Five lots have barns. The surnames of the holders are: Ryan (3), Kennedy (2), Martin, Fahey, Hanley, and Delaney.

Michael, 53, died on a Thursday of tubercular peritonitis and pulmonary tuberculosis. His son Michael was the witness to the death cert.

Margaret left the home farm in Fantane for Dublin where she worked as a draper's assistant in the 'Rose'. She developed varicose veins and returned to work on the farm. There she met and eloped with a farm labourer, Edward Fahey, who used to work for her uncle James. She and Edward went to Scotland and were married circa 1905 in Gretna Green, Scotland. They had a son there before returning to Ireland circa 1909. Her parents were extremely unhappy with this match. According to family lore, they never spoke to her again. (However, we believe that she was listed as the informant on her father's death cert.)

Marriage*26 Feb 1906 Maryhill, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland; Bride=Margaret Mary Hanly Fahey3
Death*18 Feb 1953 Dublin, Ireland1
Biography* Edward "Ned" Fahy, 1869-1953:
We have little evidence of Edward's birth and parents. According to family lore, Edward's parents might be John Fahy and Ellen Martin. And there was an Edward born to this couple in 1869. However in Edward's 1906 Scotland marriage record, his parents are listed as John Fahy and Ellen Ryan. This is the only record we have of Edward's mother's miaden name. No birth record has been found in Tipperary of an Edward born to a Fahy/Ryan couple.

Ned was a farm laborer. In 1901, he was living with and working for James Hanly in Cronavone. Ned eloped with his employer's neice Margaret Hanley. The pair went to Scotland and were married in the Catholic church in Maryhill an area of Glasgow.4 They returned to Ireland circa 1909 and, in 1911, he and his family were living in Grannane, Templederry Parish. John Collins was the landholder. Ned was working as a caretaker. The house had stone walls and a slate roof. It had three rooms with two windows in front. There was a fowl house on the property.

Edward "Ned" Fahy, 79, of 79 Comeragh Road, Dublin, died at Saint Kevin's hospital on a Wednesday. Cause of death was myocardial degeneration, prostate obstruction, senility and arteriosclerosis. G Farrell occupier of Saint Kevin's was informant. (In the absence of any information in the death record corroborating that this is the correct Edward Fahy, the record was chosen because a grandson believed Edward died in Dublin about 1955 and because the birth date calculated from the age at death is consistent with his age as reported in the 1911 census.)
