Biography* | Daniel Joseph Hannefin, 1889-1939: Born in Saint James, Phelps County, Missouri, Daniel and his family were living in Dillon township of that county in 1900. His father was a day laborer and they owned their home free of mortgage. Daniel's parents were first generation Irish-Americans; his father was born in Missouri, his mother in New York. By June of 1917, when he registered for the WWI draft, Daniel was living at 7013 Oleatha in Saint Louis and working as a price clerk at the Continental Supply Company. He had grown to be a tall man of stout build with light blue eyes and light brown hair. Daniel entered the U.S. Army (serial number 1,463,507) the next month (July) and was assigned to the 1st Missouri Field Artillery unit, National Guard Battery D. He later transferred to the 128th Field Artillery. On 20 May 1918, Daniel was shipped overseas. He returned on 22 April 1919 and was promoted to Sargeant in October. After discharge, he was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Odie J Wilkinson Post. By 1920, Daniel, his wife Eileen, his sister-in-law and three nieces were living at 1363 McCausland. He and Eileen owned the house with mortgage. Daniel was the chief clerk at an oil supply company. By 1930, Daniel and Eileen had five daughters and Daniel was working as an agent for an advertising firm. By 1939, he was editor of Credit World magazine. Daniel, age 50, died at home on a Thursday of coronary disease. He was attended by Dr. Daniel L Sexton of 607 North Grand. Daniel was survived by his wife and five daughters. His funeral was held on Saturday from Epiphany church at Ivanhoe and Smalley Avenus. Kriegshauser Mortuary, 4228 South Kingshighway was in charge. |
