Biography* | Adelaide English Coleman, 1881-1963: Born in the family home at 1 East Beach in Cobh, County Cork, Adelaide was christened on 8 January 1882 at Saint Colman's Cathedral in Cobh by the Rev. J. Barry. She was sponsored by her uncle Edward Fitzgerald and her aunt Elizabeth Fitzgerald, both of whom were her mother's siblings. Adelaide was born into a very large, well-to-do merchant family. She was the 11th of the 17 children sired by her father and his two wives. While growing up, Adelaide enjoyed all the advantages of her family's social and economic position. In this place and time that meant education in music, the arts and literature including schooling abroad. In 1908, Adelaide married Christopher Coleman, a publican. Chistopher and his occupation were considered beneath her standing. Adelaide's family was not pleased. After her husband enlisted in the British Army, Adelaide registered for a six-month mid-wifery course at Rotunda Hospital in Dublin. The army provided assistance to families whose primary breadwinner was in the service of the King. The two youngest children were placed in the orphanage at Rushbrooke where they remained until the family left for America. Adelaide entered the mid-wifery program on 12 November 1914 and received her certificate on 10 May 1915. Upon gaining her cert Adelaide was employed in private nursing at 52 Richmond Place, Dublin. When her husband was killed in 1916, Adelaide's problem of supporting herself and her three babies became more acute. She had taken Red Cross courses in England during the Great War but still did not have a nursing certificate. The outlook for employment in Ireland at that time was bleak for a woman. Especially for one with three children to raise. Both her parents were dead. Her brother Joseph, Pastor of Epiphany parish in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA offered her a position as his houskeeper. She also had a younger sister living in the Saint Louis area. So, almost three years to the day after her husband died, Adelaide and her three young daughters, ages seven, five and three, crossed the street from their East Beach home in Cobh, County Cork and boarded a ship for Liverpool. There on 2 September 1919 they boarded the SS Minnedosa6 bound for the Americas. The ship crossed the Atlantic Ocean and sailed into the Saint Lawrence Seaway stopping at Quebec City in Canada. Here Adelaide and her daughters debarked because of Adelaide's great devotion to Sainte Anne de Beaupré. She had decided to visit the great basilica named for the saint located about twenty miles east of Quebec. She and the girls then boarded a train on the Central and Pacific Railroad and entered the United States at Detroit, Michigan on the 11th of September in 1919. When they arrived in Saint Louis, Adelaide and daughter Emily lived with a friend (name unknown). Daughters Gerry and Addie stayed at either the Ursuline Academy on 16th and Locust, or at the Mercy Convent on Laclede Station Road. This arrangement continued for about a year. A nun, Sister Bonaventure, was able to obtain a nursing position for Adelaide at Saint John's hospital. There she eventually rose to the position of Night Supervisor. She returned to Ireland on at least one occasion and also entered Canada at least once on holiday. Adelaide never became a United States citizen although all three of her daughters did. Adelaide died on a Friday at age 81. She was survived by her three daughters, and two sisters. Her funeral was held Monday from the Cathedral of St. Louis. Arthur J. Donnelly Parlors, 3840 Lindell Blvd., was in charge of arrangements. |

- The Minnedosa was ordered by the Hamburg America Line in 1913, but was taken over by Canadian Pacific before completion. She was built by Barclay, Curle & Co Lts, Glasgow (engines by Harland & Wolff, Belfast) and was a 13,972 gross ton vessel, length 520 feet x beam 67.2 feet, two funnels, two masts, triple screw and a speed of 15 knots. There was accommodation for 550-cabin and 1,200-3rd class passengers. Although her keel was laid in 1913, she was not launched until 17/10/1917 and on 2/5/1918 was towed to Belfast to have her engines fitted. On 5/12/1918 she commenced her maiden voyage from Liverpool to St John, NB and on 13/12/1919 started a single round voyage from the UK to Bombay for the British government. On 21/6/1922 she commenced her first voyage from Antwerp to Southampton, Quebec and Montreal and in 1925 was refitted by Hawthorn, Leslie & Co Ltd, Hebburn-on-Tyne and her tonnage increased to 15,186 tons. In June 1926 she had accommodation for 206-cabin, 545-tourist and 590-3rd class passengers. She commenced her last Antwerp - Southampton - St John NB - Liverpool voyage on 30/3/1927 and was transferred to the Liverpool - Quebec - Montreal route on 29/4/1927. On 27/6/1931 she started her last transatlantic crossing from Glasgow to Quebec and Montreal (129 Atlantic round voyages) and was then laid up in the River Clyde. In April 1935 she was sold for scrapping and was towed to Savona, Italy, but was bought by Italia Line, renamed Piemonte and used as a troopship. On 15/8/1943 she was scuttled at Messina, salvaged in 1949 and towed to Spezia and scrapped. [North Atlantic Seaway by N. R. P. Biography* | Michael Christopher Coleman, 1882-1916: The second child and second son born to Michael Coleman and Mary O'Donoghue, he was probably named for his mother's father as would have been customary. His older brother having probably been named for his father's father. Born on 18 December 1882 at 7 Scott's Square in Queenstown (now Cobh), he was christened Michael Christopher three days later on the 21st at Saint Colman's Cathedral in Cobh by the Rev J. Murphy with sponsors Mathias O'Callaghan (mother's cousin?) and Mary O'Callaghan (mother's cousin?). In his early years, he was sometimes referred to as Christopher or Christie but always as Christopher after circa 1910. Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather before him, Christopher earned his living as a publican. By 1909, he was managing the hotel at 1 East Beach, Cobh. A hotel owned by his wife's family. Christopher Michael Coleman died on the 3rd of September in 1916, the date engraved on a tombstone in the cemetery of Cobh, County Cork. He was killed during the "Battle of the Somme" about 600-yards from the ruins of a church in Guillemont, France. Presumably, he is interred somewhere nearby. Guillemont is a tiny village about eighty-two miles north of Paris. It is approximately in the center of a triangle defined by the larger towns of Albert, Bapaume and Péronne. In late 1915 and early 1916, the French were sustaining terrible casualities at Verdun trying to hold off a German invasion. In the summer of 1916, the Allies began preparations for an offensive along the Somme River intended to relieve the unrelenting German pressure. It was to be mostly a British effort, - mostly - because the main French forces were still engaged at Verdun. The battle began in late June with artillery bombardment of the German position - this lasted for seven days. The bombardment was followed by infantry advancement which met stiff German resistance. Tremendous casualties were experienced by both sides. For a variety of reasons, the artillery bombardment had been largely ineffective. It would be over two months later, almost two weeks after Christopher's death, before the area was in undisputed British possession. At about that time, on September 15th, the British tank made its first appearance on the scene. *********** Christopher Coleman 's untimely death was a pivotal event in the history of this Coleman family. For had he not died at that time, his wife, Adelaide English Coleman, would not have crossed the Great Pond to be with her brother, the Reverend Joseph English , in Saint Louis, Missouri. And therefore, Geraldine Coleman would never have met Thomas Cody Jr, nor would Adelaide Coleman have met Karl Strobach. But why was Christopher Coleman in that place at that time? What was a thirty-three-year-old married man with three small children doing in the Army? The British Parliament had passed a Conscription Act in 1916 but it did not apply to Ireland and therefore, Christopher Coleman was a volunteer member of the Leinster Regiment. There was a lot of unrest in Ireland at the time. The central issue was: should Ireland be free or continue to be part of the British Empire? The ill-fated Easter Rebellion had occurred in Dublin earlier that year. And the unrest would eventually escalate into civil war in 1922. What were Christopher's motives in joining the British Army? Was he defending the Crown? Or fighting the Germans? Did he do it for the money? Or did he have some less obvious reason? |

Biography* | Geraldine M. "Gerry" Coleman Cody, 1911-1982: Born on a Sunday in the family home on East Beach, Geraldine was christened at Saint Colman's Cathedral in Cobh. When Geraldine's father went off to France to save the British Empire from the German Kaiser, she and her younger sister were sent to live at the Rushbrooke orphanage in Cobh. This was done courtesy of the British government who financed this option for families whose breadwinner was serving in the British Army. Gerry entered Rushbrooke on 3 June 1914 at age three and left five years later in August 1919. Gerry, her mother and sisters came to the United States through Canada. They emigrated Cobh on 2 September 1919 aboard the Steamship Minnendosa. After crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the ship entered the St. Lawrence River stopping at Quebec. Gerry and the others continued on by boat to Detroit, Michigan where they entered the United States and boarded a train for St. Louis to join her uncle, the Rev. Joe English. In 1920, Gerry, her mother and sisters were living with her mother's sister and her husband, Daniel and Eileen Hannefin, at 1363 McCausland. By 1930, they lived at 4918 Forest Park Blvd. Gerry grew to be a large woman of 5-foot 7½ inches in height and weighing 130 pounds. She was possessed of fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. In 7 September 1934, Gerry was granted citizenship at the District Court, Eastern District of Missouri at St. Louis. Gerry and Tom Cody were married at Epiphany Church, Smiley and Ivanhoe Avenues, Saint Louis by her brother-in-law John P. Cody. The reception afterward was held at the home of the groom's parents, 4464 Margaretta Ave. She and Tom raised their family of six, one boy and five girls, in St. Engelbert's Parish at 4601 Penrose. The church is located at Shreve and Carter Avenues in Saint Louis. Geraldine died on a Saturday of cardiac arrest, and a myocardial infarction. She was attended by Dr. Jitendra K. Gupta, 14377 Woodlake Dr 63107. Gerry was survived by five daughters, and two sisters. Her funeral was held on Monday from St. Louis Cathedral, 4431 Lindell Blvd. Collier's funeral home, 10123 St. Charles Rock Road, was in charge of arrangements. |
