Death* | 3 Nov 1877 | Glenbane, Glenbane, Tipperary, Ireland1 |
Biography* | James English, ca1802-1877: In 1856, James was leasing two lots in Glenbane parish, Shronell district, County Tipperary. One lot contained 18-acres/2-rood/30-perch of land which was valued at 19£ (nineteen pounds). There was a house on this lot valued at 15s (shillings) which James subleased to Patrick Heffernan. The second lot contained 32-acres/3-rood/26-perch of land valued at 32£/15s/0d (pennies) plus house and office valued at 2£. Total land holdings were 51-acres/2-rood/16-perch. The landlord was George Fitzroy Smith. By 1879, the leaseholder had changed to Margaret English. Presumably, James had died by this time. Control passed to son Patrick English circa 1891, and then to grandson Nicholas English by 1911. In 1916, the English family acquired ownership of this land but by 1924 they had sold the smaller lot to Patrick Coffey and the larger lot to Denis Quinn. In the Tithe Applotments of 1833, the only English surname listed in Glenbane parish was Pat'k English. Presumably this is James' father since James named his first born son Patrick (it was customary for a man to name his first born son after his own father). James died of cancer at age 75. He had been ailing for six-months. |

Biography* | Dr. James Edmond English, 1885-1942: The fourth of six and the eldest of two sons, he was christened James Edmond but in later years his middle name were often recorded as Edward. James spent his earliest years at 12 Bellevue in Queenstown, County Cork. By 1891, the family had moved to 3 Kings Square. His mother Maria Kelleher died at age 34, in 1892, when James was seven-years-old. His father, Edmond, a victualler, died two-years-later at age 46. In 1901, he was living with his grandmother Mary Kelleher in Barryscourt, Carrigtwohill parish. James was educated at St Vincent's College, Castlenock, and Dublin and Cork University, where he had a distinguished career in medicine and athletics. James represented the university at cricket, football, and on the running track. He also played cricket for County Cork. It 1909 Doctor English made his first appearance in the Hartlepools, coming as a house surgeon to the Hartlepools hospital. He left the Hartlepools district to go into practice at Neyland, Pembrokeshire, Wales but returned to West Hartlepool7, where he started a private practice in 1912. His office and residence then was at 38 Victoria Road. It was not long before Doctor English made his presence felt, and his activities and his work rapidly increased. He left West Hartlepool for France during WWI from 1915 until hostilities ceased. On his return a vacancy occurred for an honorary surgeon to the Hartlepools hospital and he was duly elected in 1918. From that time onwards, the hospital became his hobby, and James devoted all his spare time to its welfare. Throughout his association with the hospital Doctor English worked alongside Doctor A. W. G. Pearson, whom he succeeded as Senior Surgeon. Doctor English was a past president of the local division of the B.M.A. and chairman of the local nursing committee. At the outbreak of WWII he took a leading part in organising the medical services attached to the A.R.P. (Air Raid Precautions). In his younger days Doctor English was a regular playing member of Hartlepool Rovers Rugby Football Club, and West Hartlepool Cricket Club. He belonged to the Seaton Carew Golf Club for over 30 years and was elected Club Captain for 1934. A bachelor, Doctor English lived with two sisters, Agnes and Lily English. By 1939 they resided at 3 West Park, West Hartlepool. He was also a member of the Catenians, a social group of practicing Catholic laymen. Dr. English, 57, died on a Monday at Hartlepools hospital where he had been hospitalized for 10-months. Dr. English was survived by three sisters Agnes, Lily and Mary English. The funeral took place from St Joseph's church in West Hartlepool on Thursday. Services were conducted by Rev. Dunne. Flowers were discouraged by request of the family, masses or donations to Hartlepools hospital were preferred. Mr. H. Orde, 10 Carlton Terrace, Hartlepool was in charge of funeral arrangements. Dr. English's monument in Stranton Grange cemetery faces east and consists of an Irish cross plinth five to six foot high with a stone surround. The inscription reads...... ..................... in loving memory of James Edward English ......................................surgeon ...............................died 29th June 1942 ...................on whose soul sweet Jesus have mercy ....................................... r.i.p. Dr. English's will was approved for probate in early 1943 with sisters Margaret Agnes English and Elizabeth (Lily) Josephine English and solicitor Mr Charles Selby Tilly as executors. Doctor English left £14,099 and after making provision for two sisters, Agnes and Lily, during their lives, he left a bequest to the parish priest of St Joseph's for masses. On the death of the survivor of the said sisters, Doctor English directed his trustees to pay half his residuary estate to the Hartlepools hospital and the other half to the Roman Catholic Bishop of Heham and Newcastle, to be applied on behalf of the poor people of West Hartlepool. NOTE: At a 3% inflation rate, £14,000 in 1943 would be worth £104,000 in 2011. At current exchange rates that would be almost $170,000. [We are deeply indebted to Mr. Grenville Davies, Hartlepool, who generously provided pictures, transcripts of newspaper articles, the monument inscription and historical background on the Hartlepools, indeed for all of the information we have presented on Dr. English since his arrival in the Hartlepools in 1909.] |
