Biography* | Ellen Coleman Carroll, 1856-1918: Ellen's christening sponsors were Patrick Sheehan and Catherine Callaghan. The family lived at White View, a place that hasn't been identified yet. Presumably it is in Glanmire church parish. Ellen may have moved to Queenstown sometime before 1878 when she sponsored her nephew John Steptoe at his christening at St. Colman's. Later in that year, she was a witness at the marriage of her sister Julia Coleman to Daniel Steptoe at St. Colman's and the following year sponsored their first child, Mary Steptoe, at her christening. Ellen's husband died in 1905 and she assumed the duties of head-of-household. In 1911, the familly was living at East Beach in Queenstown. The dwelling place was a public house and Ellen was the vintner. The building had stone walls, a slate roof, 12 rooms and eight windows in the front. There were ten people in the house: Ellen, her five children - a sixth child had died - plus four boarders all from England. There also was a store house on the property. |
