Biography* Laura J. Kjerstad Leavitt, 1892-1984:
Laura completed her elementary education in Charles Mix County. She and her parents moved to Canton in 1908. Laura graduated from Canton High School in 1912, after which she attended Augustana College, then located in Canton, and taught school in Worthing for five years. After her marriage in 1917, Laura lived on the farm north of Worthing. After her husband's death in 1949, she moved to Canton. Laura was a member of Canton Lutheran church and of the Rebecca Lodge in Worthing.

Laura died on a Saturday. She was survived by a son, daughter, six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and a sister. Funeral services were held from the Canton Lutheran church on Tuesday with the Rev. Ray Jones officiating. Pallbearers were Carl Edeen, Ernest Tannem, Elnoris Kjerstad, Ben Rowe, James Leavitt, and George Kjerstad.

Biography* Theodore "Ted" Borneman, 1906-1976:
Ted was living with his parents in Springdale Township, Lincoln County, South Dakota in 1910. His father was born in Wisconsin, his mother in Iowa. Ted had three years of high school and worked as a printer. In 1935, he and his family were living at 1003 South Wayland in Sioux Falls. Ted practiced the Christian Science religion. Sometime before 1945, he and family moved to Oregon. At the time of his death he was living in Apartment 3 at 1565 West Harlow, Springfield, Oregon.

Ted, age 70, died on a Sunday. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and four grandchildren. Graveside services were held on Thursday with Jim Frake, Christian Science reader, officiating. Lounsbury-Musgrove chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Biography* Nelle Weens Madden, 1904-1957:
Born and raised in Canton, Nelle moved to Worthing with her husband after their marriage in 1925. They returned to Canton in 1937. After her husband died in 1950, Nelle operated a recreation hall in Canton for several years. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and was active in the Do and Learn extension club. She was one of the outstanding workers on the extension club project, highway safety.

Nelle, age 53, was killed on a Wednesday in a one-car accident 14 miles east of Freeport, Illnois. She was traveling with a business associate and his family and was on her way to visit her brother in Rockford, Illinois. Nelle was survived by one son, one daughter, two grand-daughters, one grand-son, one sister and two brothers. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at the Anderson Funeral Home in Canton by the Rev. E. E. Whiteside. Pallbearers were Sig Waage, Harry Skalen, Ralph Wood, Clarence Nussbaum, Walter Tresler, and Roscoe McVay.

There is some evidence that Edwin's birth and death years are wrong. Edwin was the 11th child of 13 born to James Madden and Mary Gerber. The 1900 census lists Mary as the mother of ten, six of whom are living. Edwin is not listed in the census and four other children can be identified who died before 1900.

Biography* June Madden Johnson, 1896-1949:
Born and raised in Worthing, June moved to California in 1921 where she married Reiner Johnson. She and her husband returned to Parker in Turner County, South Dakota circa 1928 and moved to Sioux Falls in 1938.

June, age 52, was stricken suddenly on a Monday at her home in Apartment 3 of 702 West Eleventh Street in Sioux Falls and died about four hours after being admitted to a local hospital. She had been in failing health for about two years. She was survived by her husband, three daughters, one brother and three sisters.

Cora was the third child and first daughter born to James Madden and Mary Gerber. She graduated from the Worthing public schools and worked as a saleslady in Worthing stores for many years. In 1941, she moved to Sioux Falls.

Cora, age 61, died early on a Friday morning at a Sioux Falls hospital after an extended illness. She was survived by three brothers and four sisters. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Ray Allen on Sunday. Pallbearers were Irv Schwartz, Joe Kuhns, Mark Bushnell, Walt Sherman, Frank Devitt, and Chesley Haymond.

Reiner was a first generation American born to German parents. He first appears in Lincoln County, South Dakota in 1920 living on Third (Street?) in Lennox with his parents. Reiner is a tall, slender man with blue eyes and dark brown hair. He worked as an independent house painter. For some period in the 1920s Reiner lived in California. By 1930, he had returned to Turner County, South Dakota and was living with his brother in Parker township and working as an implements dealer (farm equipment?).

When Reiner died on a Wednesday, he was living in Iona, Minnesota.
