Biography* | John Walzer, 1837-1897: John immigrated to the United States in 1846/7 with his parents and two younger brothers, Henry and Phillip. The family settled in Norwegian township, Schuylkill county, Pennsylvania. By 1870, John, married and with two children, is living in the 1st ward of Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky and working as a laborer. He has a personal estate of $500, is illiterate and a citizen of the United States. John's two brothers live in the same city. By 1880, John and family are living at 2415 DeKalb Street in St. Louis, Missouri. He is employed as a roller in a rolling mill. One brother, Henry, has also moved to St Louis; the other brother, Phillip, to Cincinnati, Ohio. John, 59, of 1106B Victor Street, died on a Thursday of la grippe (influenza). In his obituary, published in the St Louis Pos-Dispatch, there is a request that newspapers in Covington, Kentucky; Cincinnati, Ohio and Pottsville, Pennsylvania please copy (the obit). NOTE Covington is probably on the request list because Taphorns live there (John's wife's maiden name). Two Covington Taphorns, of Mary Anna's generation and born in Germany, could be her brothers. There are no Walzers. Cincinnati is on the request list because John's brother Philip lives there. Pottsville is in Schuylkill County where the Walzer family settled on coming to the United States. There are two of John's sisters unaccounted for and there may be other relatives in that area that we don't know about (yet). The fact that Pottsville was in the request list suggests there are. |
