Biography* | Mary Anna Taphorn Walzer, 1843-1919: Nothing is known about Mary Anna's early years. She came to the United States from her native Germany circa 1852 when she was about nine-years-old. It is unknown whom Mary Anna traveled with, if anyone. No evidence of her parents, whose names were listed on Mary Anna's death cert, has been uncovered in the U.S.A. In 1870, Mary Anna was living in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky and working as a servant. By 1880, she was married and had born two children. Before 1880, the family moved to St. Louis, Missouri. Her husband died in 1897 and in his obituary, Covington, Kentucky newspapers are requested to copy the obit. Since her husband had no known relatives in Covington, it suggests that Mary Anna doid. After her husband died, Mary Anna rented at 2359 South Broadway in the 8th ward. By 1910, she owned a house free of mortgage at 4230 Schiller Place in the 13th ward. Mary Anna, 75, died on a Friday from cancer of the chest and neck. She had been suffering from this disease for six months and was attended by Dr. H. H. Born of 3223 Park. Mary Anna had been living with her son at 4182 Walsh Avenue in the 13th ward of St. Louis. Mary Anna was survived by one son, one daughter, two grandsons and one sister. The funeral was held on Monday from the home to St. John Baptist church. J. H. Gebden L. & N. Company of 2842 Merrimac was in charge of arrangements. |
