Biography* | Helen Erickson Leonard, 1902-1968: Helen was baptized Hilda Maria Erickson on 23 August 1902 at Emanuel Lutheran Church, Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. She was recorded as Hilda in her early years but in her 20s changed to Helen. In 1910 the family was renting at 25 Dean Street in Norwood and her father Mathew was working in a mill. He died in 1918 and the mother Mary married Joseph Erickson. Helen, a first generation Finnish-American, was the first of eight children and had three sisters. In 1920, they were renting at 26 Railroad Street in Fitchburg, Worcester County. Helen wasn't listed with the family in 1930. In 1932, she married Edward Leonard. In 1942 they were living at 95 May Street in Worcester. Helen worked as a saleslady for Marcus & Co for many years before retiring in 1960. Helen, a resident of 18 Norrback Avenue, died in City Hospital on a Tuesday at age 665. She was survived by husband, Edward F Leonard, four brothers John, Frank and Walter all of Fitchburg and Alfred of Dunedin, Florida, two sisters Hazel (Edward) Coons of Wethersfield, Connecticut and Alice (Harry) Patrinelli of Leominster, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held on Friday from Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster Street, followed by high mass at Saint Christopher's. |

Biography* | Gerald McMurray, 1895-1971: Born in Ireland, Gerald was the third of seven born to Charles McMorrow and Mary Anne McMorrow and was the second of four sons5. His name listed on his birh record was Garrett McMorrow. In the 1901 census of Ireland he was listed as Gerald McMorrow. In every other record found he is listed as Gerald McMurray. In 1910, Gerald, 15, boarded the SS Columbia in Londenderry, Ireland (now Northern Ireland) with his sister Anna, 19. They arrived at the Port of New York, to meet their uncle Gerald McMurray, on 24 April. He and Anna were detained for special inquiry but were admitted the following day. In 1917, Gerald registered for the World War 1 draft. His residence was 100 East 87th Street in New York City (Manhattan) and he was working as a chauffeur for 5th Avenue Coach at 100 East 102 Street. Gerald listed his birthplace as Dowra6, Couny Leitrim, Ireland and claimed his mother as a dependent (both of his parents were alive and living in Ireland!). He was a tall man of medium build with blue eyes, blond hair and no disabilities. He signed the registration Gerald McMurray on the 5th of June. He also became a United States citizen in that year, of 1917. Gerald enlisted in the U.S. Navy on 22 March 1918 and was released on 17 January 1919. By 1920, he was married to Catherine Leonard and they were renting at 466 131st Street West. By 1930 they were renting at 109 Woodycrest Avenue in the Bronx, New York for $55/month. Gerald had risen to supervisor at the coach company. In 1939, he worked all 52-weeks and earned wages of $1,560. In 1940, they were renting at 64 Jesup Place for $48/month. In 1942, Gerald registered for the World War II draft. They were back on Woodycrest living at 963 and had no telephone. He was 6'-2''in height7, weighed 212 pounds, had blue eyes, gray hair and ruddy complexion. He signed Gerald McMurray on 27 April. He was a member of Saint Barnabas Catholic Church in the Bronx. Gerald, 75, died on a Wednesday while visiting 2286 Carolyn Drive in Dunedin, Florida. He was survived by his wife Catherine, daughter Mrs Richard (Mary) Timmins of Dunedin, sons Gerald E. of the Bronx, and Charles L. of Indian Harbor Beach in Florida, three grandchildren, a brother Patrick of Ireland, sisters Sr Mary Michael and Sr Raphael of the Franciscan Order in the New York area. Moss Dunedin Chapel of Dunedin was in charge of arrangements. |

- Gerald's father was not always listed as McMorrow. Surnames on the birth records for four of the children - the 1st, 4th, 6th & 7th - are listed as McMorrow. The other three - the 2nd, 3rd & 5th - are listed as McMurrray. The family is listed as McMorrow on Ireland's 1901 census and as McMurray on the 1911 census. The father Charles was listed as McMorrow on his marriage record to Mary Anne McMorrow. Gerald himself was always listed as McMurray after leaving Ireland.

Biography* | Daniel Sullivan Shea, 1898-1948: Daniel was a first generation Irish-American. His father Jeremiah, a carpenter, was born in Ireland. Daniel's mother Nora Sullivan was a first generation Irish-American herself who was born in Massachusetts. The family owned a mortgaged triplex at 24 Gage street in Worcester's 3rd ward. They occupied one apartment and rented out the other two. By 1920, they had bought, with mortgage, another triplex (unknown if they sold the Gage Street property) at 40 Kingsbury Street in the 8th ward. They used the same living arrangement where they occupied one apartment and rented the other two. The father Jeremiah later worked for the city and then the highway department. Daniel was the sixth of seven children and the second of three sons. In 1918, he registered for the World War I draft. At the time he was working as a clerk in the freight office of the Boston & Albany Railroad on Franklin Street in Worcester. Daniel was of medium height and build with blur eyes and dark hair. His mother Nora of the same address was his nearest relative. He signed the registraion on the 12th of September as Daniel Sullivan Shea. He married Margaret Leonard in 1927 and in 1930 they were renting at number 1 Granite Street in Worcester for $30/month. By 1940, they were renting an apartment in a six-unit building at 11 Hollywood Street for $30/month. When Daniel registered for the World War II draft in 1942 at age 43, he 5'-7'' tall, weighed 165 pounds, had blue eyes, gray hair, light complexion and a scar back of left ear. He signed as Daniel S. Shea on February 15th. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the Holy Name Society of Saint Paul's church. Daniel became ill in September 1947. Daniel, age 49, died at his home, 40 Kingsbury Street4, on a Tuesday. He was survived by his wife Margaret, two brothers Timothy S. and Mark J. of Worcester, three sisters Alice (Joseph) Curtin of Oakdale, Mrs Ellen Larava and Mrs Mary Delaney both of Worcester, and several nieces and nephews. His funeral was held on Thursday from McCrea funeral home, 921 Main Street, followed by high mass at Saint Paul's. |

Biography* | Fannie M. Lawlor Green, 1886-1966: Fannie was born to a shoemaker father born in Washington, D.C. and a mother born in Lynn. Both her father and mother were first generation Irish-Americans. At the time of her birth, the family was living at 19 Williams Street, Lynn. In 1900, they were renting at 69 Williams. Fannie was one of five children. There was an older sister and two yonger brothers, One unknown child died before 1900. In 1909, Fannie was living at 26 Coburn Street and working as an ''operative'' (probably a worker in a manufacturing company). She was married in January that year to Joseph Green at Saint Joseph's Catholic church, 115 Union Street at Green Street, by John C. Harrington, a Catholic priest. In 1910, Fannie and Joseph were renting at 97 Essex. By 1920 they had bought a house with mortgage at 331 Eastern in the 3rd ward. By 1930, the house was valued at $8,000. Husband Joseph died in 1961. Fannie, 79, died on a Saturday. She was oredeceaed by her husband Jpseph and survived by two childre, Fannie was buried with her mother, husband and daughter. NOTE: She was almost always listed as Fannie or Fanny until aboiut age 50. After that birthday the listing was usually Frances, as in her husband Joseph's obituary and on her tombstone. |

Biography* | Maria Looby Hartnett Green, 1881-1951: Not much is known about Maria's family. Both of her parents were born in Worcester and her father Michael was working as a brakeman on a railroad when she was born. In 1900, Maria married Michael Hartnett who was a year older, was born in Concord and worked as a machinist. Maria worked as a boot stitcher. They were married by Cornelius Foley a Catholic priest at Saint John's Catholic church on Temple Street. Maria and Michael had at least one child5 and eventually divorced. In 1922, Maria married John Henry Green in Manhattan, New York. In 1930, they were renting, for $75/month, at 17 Wellington Street in Worcester's 8th ward and had three roomers. In 1939, Maria worked 52-weeks as a lodger at a lodging house. She had no wages but had other income. In 1940, they were renting an apartment (in a building with 7-units) at 91 Murray Avenue, also in the 8th ward. Again they had three roomers (different) Maria worked 28-hours the week ending 30 March. Maria died in Worcester in 1951 the same year and place that her husband John Green died. Neither Maria nor her daughter were mentioned in husband John Green's obit. |
