Biography* | Francis McGovern, 1871-1936: Francis was the first of twelve children and immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1893 and was naturalized in 1898. At least six of his siblings immigrated also, all but one of whom lived in Massachusetts. In 1900, married and with one daughter, Francis was renting on Park Street, Arlington, Middlesex County, Massachusetts and was working as a laborer. His first wife, Mary Kenney, died in 1905 and Francis married Jennie Leonard in 1906. In 1910, he and Jennie owned a mortgaged duplex at 34 Lewis Avenue in Arlington. Francis was working in a coal yard. In 1916, Francis joined Saint Malachi's Court, #81, of M.C.O.F.6 and named wife Jennie as sole beneficiary. By 1920, he was working as a wagon driver for the yard. And by 1930, the house was valued at $5,000. In 1935, Francis changed the beneficiary of the MCOF policy to his son and daughter. Francis, 65, died on a Tuesday. He was survived by his second wife and two children. The funeral was held on Thursday from the home followed by high mass at Saint Agnes Catholic church. Biography* | James Farmer, 1872-1963: That the James Farmer born in Carricknaseer is our James Farmer is not a sure thing. The father in the birth record is listed as Thomas. The following describes the tenuous threads. In 1901, there is a James Farmer, born 1874, listed in Drumharrif, Cleenish parish with his father Thomas. The mother is not listed but there is a visitor listed named John Woods in the house, age 25. The house is rated 2nd class, with stone walls, a thatch roof, 4 rooms, and 3 windows in front. There are 5 out-buildings, the landlord is Wm. J. Brown. In 1911, there is a James Farmer, born 1871, a herder that cannot read in Gortatole, Cleenish parish. Also in the house is a widow relative Catherine Leonard age 76. No father is listed but there is a servant named John Woods in the house, age 46. The house is rated 2nd class, with stone walls, a thatch roof, 4 rooms, and 3 windows in front. There are 5 out-buildings, the landlord is Hugh Green. Carricknaseer and Gortatole are long narrow townlands that abut on their long sides. Drumharriff is a few townlands to the east. That the James Farmer in 1901 is the same James Farmer as in 1911 seems likely. This James father's name was Thomas. So is he the same James as the one born in Carricknaseer? James Farmer had an "interest" in the Abocurragh farm before his mother-in-law died in 1912. Soon after she died, James purchased the farm from the landlord Hen. G. Archdall. On 26 January 1949, he transferred the property to his daughter Mary Kate Rutledge of Letterbreen in consideration of natural love and affection (he was living with her and her husband John Rutledge). Then, on 13 March 1962, he revoked the transfer and registered himself as owner. He subsequently willed the property to his son Patrick. When his wife Mary Anne died in 1952, they were living with son Patrick in Ballintogher, County Sligo. Circa 1957, he returned to Enniskillen. He was listed as a retired railroad employee in his wife's death cert. |
