Death* | 17 Jul 1912 | Abocurragh, Cleenish, Fermanagh, Ireland; Witness=James Farmer3 |
Biography* | Catherine Clancy Leonard, ca1835-1912: Catherine was the third born, of nine, from Edward Clancy testimony in brother John's 1918 probate. Her birth year recorded here was calculated from her age as reported in the 1911 census. This maintains the birth order listed in the 1918 probate. Catherine may have been born as early as 1827 (calculated from her age at death on her 1912 death cert). Of course, her older brother James would have had to have been born earlier also. Catherine married John Leonard in the Kinawley village church, County Fermanagh in 1857. No ages, parents, residences or witnesses are listed in the church record. After their marriage, Catherine and John lived in the townland of Abocurragh in Cleenish parish. They had six known children, four girls and two boys. The oldest girl is identified by her marriage. There are christening records in Cleenish for four of the others, two girls and two boys. The four oldest, three girls and one boy, went to the USA. These emigrants all lived in Massachusetts near Boston, two in Worcester, one in Milford, and one in Lynn. Catherine continued to live in the Abocurragh house after husband John died. She is not listed in Abocurragh in the 1911 census but with her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Anne and James Farmer in Gortatole townland, Cleenish parish. Catherine died at home on a Wednesday of old age. She was 85. Her son-in-law, James Farmer, was the informant on her death record. Catherine's place of burial is not known. Soon after her death, son-in-law James Farmer purchased the farm from the landlord, Hen. G. Archdall. No one ever lived in the house again. Although there are Leonards in the Cleenish parish today, none have been found that are connected to this John Leonard as of June 1995. The derelict house still stands. |

Biography* | John Leonard, ca1820-1893: John occupied half of a small farm in Abocurragh, Cleenish parish, County Fermanagh. The house, rated 3rd class, was made of wood with a thatch roof.4 It consisted of three rooms and had two windows in the front. There were two out-buildings on his portion of the farm. In 1861, the lot consisted of 12 acres, 3 roods, and 35 perches (4 roods = 1 acre, 40 perches= 1 rood) and had two houses. One house was occupied by John and the other by a Hugh Leonard (John's brother?). By 1901, the lot had been divided into nearly equal lots of six-plus acres each. John, age about 72, died at home on a Monday probably of scrofula.5 His son Pat Leonard was the informant on his death record. Where John is buried is not known. |
