Biography* | Mary E. Hennessy Brennan, 1871-1937: In 1880, Mary, a first generation Irish-American, was the eldest of two children and the only daughter. The family lived at 212 Newberry Avenue in Chicago and her father Timothy drove an express wagon for a living. After their marriage in 1902, Mary and her husband David Brennan lived on a farm in Blinsmon township, Moody County, South Dakota. Mary and her husband separated in 1906 when their son was one-year-old. In 1910 the son Bernard was living with his uncle Martin Brennan in Minnesota. The boy's father David was listed as divorced and living in North Dakota. Mary may have been living in Colorado Springs, Colorado and working as a servant to a private family. In 1920, Mary was renting at 6223 Ellis Avenue, a triplex, in the 7th ward of Chicago. She had no occupation, had three boarders and was listed as a widow. Mary, 66, died on a Tuesday. Her obituary listed her survivors as a son Bernard of Hingham, Montana and that she was predeceased by her husband David. The funeral was held on Friday at Saint Bernard's church. The funeral home at 6915 Wentworth Avenue was in charge. |

Biography* | Bernard Patrick Brennan, 1905-1970: Born in Trent, South Dakota, Bernard's father was born in Minnesota, his mother in Illinois. At the time the family lived on a farm in Blinsmon township, the next township east of Trent. His parents separated when he was about one-year-old and Bernard went to live with his uncle Martin Brennan in Springwater township, Rock County, Minnesota for a time. In 1912, when he was 7-years-old, Bernard went to live with his father on a farm in School District 22 of Hill County, Montana. His mother had moved back to Chicago, Illinois. Bernard received a 4-year high school education and lived in Montana for the rest of his life. He was a member of the Lutheran church and the Odd Fellows Lodge. Bernard, 64, died on a Monday. He was survived by his wife Alice, three daughters and five grandchildren. The funeral was held in the Hingham Lutheran Church on Friday. Pastor Gerald E. Ebelt officiated. Pallbearers were Lloyd Twedt, Lowell Twedt, Bob Blake Sr., Erwin Carlson, Bob Pester and Jim Pester. Honorary pallbearers were Alton Sterry, Clint Brevik, Lawrence Foix, John Morrissey, Martin Sylte, Ben Domire, and Walter Greeno. Ushers were Miram Severud, Bob Petrick and Bob Rathbun. Organist Sharon Spicher accompanied Larry and Ethel Thompson as they sang a duet, "How Great Thou Art". The congregation sang, "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" and "My Faith Looks Up to Thee." |

At the age of five she came to the Black Coulee area south of Rudyard, Montana with her parents. Alice graduated from Hingham High School in 1927. After her 1930 marriage to Bernard Brennan they lived in Hingham, Hill County, Montana. Alice, 63, of Hingham, died on a Tuesday in a Havre, Montana hospital. She was survived by three-daughters, three-sisters: Mary Bonham of Oakland, California, Frances Habeck of Rudyard, Montana and Louise Lustgraaf of Great Falls, Montana; two-brothers, James Mikulecky of Sedro Wooley, Washington and Charles Mikulecky of Rudyard, Montana. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bernard, a sister Anna Sylte of Hingham and a brother Mark Mikulecky of Racine, Wisconsin. The funeral was held on Friday at the Hingham Lutheran Church. |

Biography* | Edith F. Hanson Brennan, 1881-1946: Edith was a first-generation Norwegian-American born to a father born in Norway and a mother born in Iowa. She was the third child of eleven and the second daughter. By 1885, the family lived in Rose Dell townshio, Rock County, Minnesota. In 1895, Edith and her older sister Bertha were living in Rose Dell but not with the family. Edith was living with Frances & Bertha Welliver. Bertha was living with Ole & Annie Englebritson. In 1900, Edith was back living with her widowed father and eight of her siblings in Springwater township. Edith and husband Patrick produced thirteen children of their own. All of whom lived to adulthood and married.The family lived in Jackson township, Sargent County, North Dakota for 22-years. By 1930, the family had moved to Oakes in Dickey County. Edith, 64, a resident of the Oakes area for 38 years, died on a Friday. She had been seriously ill for three months. Edith was survived by her husband Patrick, four sons: Leo and Phillip of Carrington; Lester of Cutbank, Montana; and Lawrence of Rye, New York; daughers: Mrs. Oliver (Margaret) Solheim, of Chico, California; Mrs. E. P. (Frances) Smith of Alameda, California; Delores, of Oakland, California; Mrs. C. L. (Mildred) Shelver, of Aberdeen, South Dakota; Lorraine, of Paynesville, Minnesota; Opal, Marianna, Eileen and Mrs. L.(sic) J. (Patricia) McGrann all of Oakes. The funeral was held Monday at Saint Charles Church in Oakes. Fr. Edward McDonald officiated. Pall bearers were Frank Horan, M. J. Pfeifer, John Sheridan, L. C. Barclay, C. E. Raney and S. J. DuRand. Special music was supplied by the Saint Charles choir and Mrs. Fred Palin of Bismarck. Mrs. Julius Fiala was organist. Those present from a distance for the funeral were M/M C. L. Shelver, R. J. McGrann, M/M D. J. Brennan, all of Enderlin; Mrs Art Wade of Ellendale; Mrs. Fred Palen of Bismarck; Mrs. John Brennan of Sherman, South Dakota, and Ira and Alfred Hanson, of Clark, South Dakota. |

Biography* | Leo Elmer Brennan, 1901-1983: Leo was the oldest of thirteen. His obituary claims he was born in Garretson, South Dakota but the birth index at the Minnesota Historical Society attests that he was born in Rock County, Minnesota. Leo was raised and attended school at Oakes, North Dakota where he completed four-years of high school. In 1920, Leo, at age 18, was living in the boarding house, with 18 others, of Thomas and Phoebe Roberts at Union and 2nd Street North in Oakes (2nd ward), Dickey County, North Dakota and working as a cashier in a pool hall. He moved to Carrington in 1928. Leo's obituary listed his marriage to Evangeline in May of 1929. But in 1930, Leo, single, was a lodger with the Lundeen family in Carrington's 2nd ward. Evangeline was also single and rooming with a different family. The marriage must have taken place in 1930. In 1940, married with two children, Leo and Evangeline were renting half a duplex at 610 2nd Street North in Carrington for $25/month. Leo was manager of North American Creamery and worked 60-hours in the week-ending 30 March. In 1939, Leo worked 52-weeks and earned $2,640 in wages. He retired in 1978. Leo was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Leo, 82, died on a Monday at Golden Acres Manor, Carrington. Survivors include his wife Vange of Carrington, a daughter, a son, nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren and ten siblings: Lester of Cut Bank, MT; Lawrence of Fort Myers, Florida; Phillip of Carrington: Margaret Solheim of Napa, California; Mildred Shelver of Roseburg, Oregon; Opal Peterson of Hayward, California; Pat McGrann of Watertown, South Dakota; Dolores Meagher; Mrs. Ed (Francis) Smith, and Eileen Maderais(sic), all of Hayward California. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lorraine and Mary Ann. The funeral was held on Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Rev. F. J. Preske officiated and Mrs. John Palmer was organist. Mrs. Jerome Page provided special music. Pallberers were Percy Engberg, Clifford Silkey, Jerome Page, Donald Klocke, Joe Jaeger and Percy Hambrick. Honorary beareres were: Havery Nicholson, Melvin Rohrer, Otto Klindworth, Bruce Craven, Bernard Schroeder, Earl Liddle and Harold Myers. |

Biography* | Lester Francis Brennan, 1904-1985: The second of thirteen children and the second of four sons, Lester grew up on a farm in Jackson township, Sargent County, North Dakota. He completed 4-years of high school in Oakes, Dickey County. By 1930 Lester had left the home farm and was rooming on Main Street in Ellendale, Dickey County. He was working as a salesman in a clothing store. In 1935, Lester was living in Carrington, Foster County, North Dakota and in 1937 he moved to Cut Bank, Glacier County, Montana. There he was employed at the F. A. Buttrey Company, a dry goods and general merchandise store. In 1939, he earned $1,500 as a clerk in the shoe department. Also in that year he married Louise Baumann. They eventually divorced and Louise remarried. Later Lester worked for the Union Oil Company as a lab technician until his retirement in 1967. He also managed the Pro Shop at the Cut Bank Golf and Country Club for many years. Lester was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Cut Bank Golf & Country Club, where he won a golf tournament at the age of 72. He was also on the Board of Directors for the Senior Citizen Center until retiring for health reasons. Lester was an avid golf and sports fan. Lester, 81, died at home on a Friday of natural causes. Survivors include two brothers, Lawrence of Fort Myers, Florida, and Phil of Carrington, North Dakota; six sisters, Margaret Solheim of Napa, California, Opal Peterson and Eileen Medeiros of Oakland, California, Frances Smith of Hayward, California, Patricia McGrann of Watertown, South Dakota, and Mildred Shelver of Roseburg, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother. The funeral was held on Wednesday Saint Margaret's Catholic Church with Father Richard Sodja officiating. Pallbearers were Wilbur Werner, Tom Sheridan, James McCourt, Mike Ward, Glenn Mller & Lowell McGee. The Burns Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. |

Biography* | Lawrence Leroy Brennan, 1906-2002: Born in South Dakota to parents born in Minnesota, Lawrence was the fourth child of thirteen and the third son of four. In 1910 the family was living on a farm in Jackson township of Sargent County, North Dakota where Lawrence grew up. He graduated from Lombard College, Galesburg, Iillinois in 1929 and went to work in Pontiac, Michigan as a core maker in a factory. While there he roomed at 11 West Wilson Street with six other young men. Soon after he went to New York City and became a Recreational Director and later a Physical Education Teacher at Manhattan College in the Bronx, New York. In 1939, Lawrence worked 52-weeks for salary of $2,000. By 1940, married and with two children, Lawrence was renting an apartment for $63/monthin , at 4660 Spuyten Duyvil Parkway in the Bronx. There were 33-apartments in the building. In 1942 he went into the Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war Lawrence worked as a budget analyst for the Veterans's Administration, first in Seattle, Washington, and then in Washington, D.C., where he was living when his father died in 1949. In 1969 he retired and moved to Fort Myers, Florida and eventually to Tavares. Lawrence was a member of the Church of the Resurrection and Cypress Lake Country Club. Lawrence, 95, of Tavares, Florida died on a Friday. He was survived by his wife of 65-years, Doris, two children and their spouses, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two sisters, Frances (Ed) Smith and Eileen Medeiros. The funeral was held on Wednesday at the Church of the Resurrection in Fort Myers, Florida. Kiser Funeral Home, 9231 Cypress Lake Drive was in charge. |

By 1930, the family had moved into the 3rd ward of Oakes in Dickey County and Mildred was working as a bookkeeper at a creamery. By 1946, she, her husband and their children were living in Aberdeen, Brown County, South Dakota. In 1954, Mildred ran for public office. She entered the Republican primary as a candidate for County Treasuer where she had worked for 5-years. Mildred, with more than 47% of the vote, lost in the primary to George Bickel. Mildred's husband Chester died in 1970 and soon after she moved to Roseburg in Douglas County, Oregon. There she worked for 5-years as a bookkeeper for the YMCA. Mildred was a member of St Joseph's Catholic church in Roseburg and Ladies of the Moose. Mildred, 88, died on a Friday at a Roseburg hospital. She was survived by daughters: Norma Hall of Idleyld Park, Oegon; Carol Rinio of Roseburg; Cheryl Ernst of Saint Louis Park, Minnesota; and Patricia Lee of South Miami, Florida, sisters Frances Smith and Eleen Medeiros of California and Patricia McGrann of South Dakota, five-grandchildren, three-step-grandchildren, five-great-grandchildren and six-step-great-grandchildren. Mildred was preceded by her aforementioned husband and two sons, Donald and Thomas. The funeral was held on Tuesday at Saint Joseph's with the Rev Ray Elem, OSA officiating. There was a private inurnment. Long & Shukle Memorial Chapel was in charge. |

Circa 1994 she moved to Martinez, Contra Costa County. Opal, 84, died on a Saturday at San Marco Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County. She was survived by sisters, Mildred Shelver of Oregon, Patricia McGrann of North Dakota, Francis Smith of Hayward and Eileen Medeiros of Hayward. Her husband, Raymond "Pete" Peterson, died in 1961. The funeral was held on Thursday at Christ the King Church in Pleasant Hill. Arrangements were made by Oak Park Hills Chapel, Walnut Creek. Memorial gifts were suggested to Saint Anthony's Dining Room, 121 Golden Gate Avenue, San Francisco, California. |
