Biography* Frank Horan, 1883-1967:
Born in Minnesota, Frank's parents were first-generation Irish-Americans. His mother Sarah was born in Ohio. His father Michael was born in West Virginia but grew up in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. In 1880, Frank's parents, already married, were living with Sarah's parents in Faxon township of Sibley County, Minnesota. Michael was working on the family farm. In 1885, the family lived in the Village of Green Isle. The family moved to North Dakota circa 1891 and by 1900 owned a farm free of mortgage in Denver township, Sargent County. Frank had an older sister also born in Minnesota and a younger sister born in North Dakota. Frank received one year of high school education and by 1910, married and with a 7-month-old daughter Margaret, owned a farm with mortgage in the same township. In 1920, they were renting a farm also in Denver township. In 1930, rent for the house was $8/month. In 1940, Frank worked 60-hours in the week/ending 31 March. Rent for the house was now $1/month. In 1942, the family moved to Oakes, Dickey County North Dakota and Frank worked for A. H. Denning in the Skelly Station from 1943 to 1962.

Frank died on a Monday at age 83 (see NOTE). He was survived by two daughters: Mrs. Fred Ferch (Margaret) of Verona and Mrs. Evelyn Rogers of Long Beach, California; two sisters, Mrs. Ray (Lillian) Baumgartner and Miss Margaret Horan of Saint Paul; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Frank's wife Johanna died in 1955. The funeral was held at Saint Charles Catholic Church on Monday with the Very Rev Edward McDonal officiating. Pallbearers were A. H. Denning, Ernest Titus, Floyd Ferguson, Clarence Sather, Don Larson and S. H. Jensen.

NOTE: Frank's birth year is variously recorded as 1881, 1882 and 1883. He himself consistently gave it as 1881 and that is the year on his tombstone. In the Social Security Death Index, Frank's birth year is listed as 1882. However, Sibley County, birth records list his birth year as 1883. And although it is certainly possible that his birth wasn't reported until he was two-years-old, that is the year we have used.
