Biography* | Clara Larson Conerty, 1883-1967: Clara, a first generation Norwegian-American, was the second of four children. She had one younger brother. Her father Christian Larson immigrated in 1867, her mother in 1875. Clara received an 8th grade education. In 1900, the family was operating a farm they owned with mortgage in Maple Grove township, Barron County, Wisconsin. By 1905 the father had retired and the family had moved into Barron City. Clara was working as a dressmaker. By 1920, she was living with her brother-in-law and sister, Arnold and Laurina Heyer, in Shoshoni, Fremont County, Wyoming. Clara was working as a clerk in Arnold's general store. By 1930, she had moved back to Barron and was living with her widowed father and widowed brother Julian. Their house was valued at $2,500 and Clara was listed as the owner although her father was listed as head of the house. Shortly after, Clara and her father moved to Madison, Wisconisn. In 1935, at the age of 52, Clara was married for the 1st time to Charles Conerty. In February 1940, Clara's father Christian died and was buried in Barron. Clara and Charles lived at 115 East Mifflin Street in the 1st ward. Neither of them worked for wages in 1939 and both had other income. Husband Charles died in April the following year. When he died, Clara was living at 1309 Evelyn Street in Rockford, Illinois. In late 1952, Clara moved to Denver, Colorado. Clara, of Denver, died at age 83. She was buried in the same cemetery as her sister Laurina. |

Biography* | Constance Cora Clifton Ryan, 1922-2011: Constance was the younger of two daughters born to James Clifton, born in North Dakota, and Emma Zehren, born in Minnesota. In 1930 the family was renting an apartment, for $30/month, in a triplex at 504 Seventh Avenue South in the 2nd ward of Great Falls, Montana. The father James was working as a laborer on odd jobs. Later that year they left the cold Montana winters behind and moved by train to Eureka, California. There Constance attended Franklin Elementary School. In 1940 the family was renting at 1118 6th Street in the 2nd ward for $23/month. The father James was working in a lumber yard. In 1939, he worked 42-weeks and earned wages of $900. Constance graduated from Eureka High School in 1941. She worked as an usherette and cashier for local theaters (State, Eureka, Rialto & Liberty), and at Cottage Cafe in Eureka. Later she worked for Chicago Bridge & Iron Company (CB&I) in the office and shipping department, the Federal Department Store and for the State of California Department of Employment for 22 years before retiring. In 1943, Constance married Thomas Ryan at the First Baptist Church in San Francisco, California while he was on leave from the U.S.Navy. Constance was a member of the 'Sirens' Eureka Fire Department Wives Auxiliary Club, Moose Lodge, Singles Club, Women of the Elks Lodge, Eureka Women's Club, The Emblem Club and the Eureka First Baptist Church. Constance, 89, of Timber Ridge in Eureka, died on a Sunday. She was attended by Dr. Teresa Marshall and Hospice of Humboldt. She was preceded by husband Thomas L. Ryan, parents James F. and Emma T. Clifton, sister Gayle McKee and infant nephew Patrick McKee. She was survived by a son, two daughters, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two nephews. A memorial service was held on Saturday at Sanders Funeral Home in Eureka. Memorials were requested to Hospice of Humboldt. |
