Burial* | 28 May 1928 | Calvary Cemetery, Saint Louis, Missouri (MO), United States (US)7 |
Biography* | Michael Begley, 1875-1928: As seems typically the case, recordings of Irish births are inconsistent, and Michael's records are no exception. The anchor for us, as always, is the christening record, if one exists. Not that the priests have proven to be meticulous record keepers but - it's a stake in the ground and the birth is not likely to have occurred after the christening event. Michael was christened on 11 March 1875. His civil birth record lists 03 April 1875. His 1915 Declaration of Intent to become a United States citizen, his 1918 Petition for Naturalization and his 1918 Registration for the Draft all list 20 March 1874 (Ah - some consistency there, even though it's nine-days after his christening!). Michael emigrated Ireland in 1900, seven years after the death of his mother, and arrived at the Port of New York in New York City on 01 August 1900 aboard the Oceanic from Queenstown (Cobh), County Cork, Ireland. He was listed on the ship's passenger manifest as a single male from Liscarroll with $30 in his pocket and a ticket to Saint Louis, Missouri to meet his uncle J. Begley of 1127 St. Louis Avenue. In 1910, Michael was living with his uncle John Begley and incorrectly listed as the uncle's son. The uncle's family had moved from 1127 St. Louis Avenue to 2811 North 23rd Street in Saint Louis 18th ward. Michael was working as a shoemaker for a shoehouse. Declaring his Intention to become a U.S. citizen in the Circuit Court of Saint Louis on 04 September 1915, he incorrectly listed the Olympic as the ship upon which he left Queenstown (Cobh). Michael listed his residence as 2827 North 23rd Street, his occupation as shoeworker and his physical description as being of dark complexion, standing 5ft-10in tall, weighing 155 lbs, with black hair and brown eyes. Two-years-six-months later, on 22 April 1918, Michael files a Petition for Naturalization. He lists the same residence, occupation shoemaker, and further declares that he is not married, has no children and left Queenstown on 25 July 1900 (aboard the Olympic), arrived in New York City on 01 August 1900 and was in Saint Louis nine days later. Michael's petition was witnessed by John O'Brien, unemployed, of 1808 Bacon Street, Saint Louis (Thomas Cody and wife Mary Begley, Michael's cousin, were living at this address in 1910. As a result of this co-incidence there is a suspicion, as yet unproven, that John O'Brien is related to Mary Begley Cody) and by the same Thos J Cody, city fireman, of 3021A North Taylor Avenue, Saint Louis (the same Thomas Cody that lived at 1808 Bacon in 1910). On 12 September of 1918, Michael registered for the draft (World War I). His address has changed to 3100 North Taylor, St Louis, he is employed by International Shoe Co. on Jefferson and his physical decription is tall in height, of medium build with brown eyes and black hair. His nearest relative is his father Timothy in County Cork, Ireland. By 1928, Michael is living at 6458 Lloyd Avenue, St Louis. Michael, age 53, died of pulmonary tuberculosis on a Thursday at Mount Saint Rose sanitarium in Carondelet. He was attended by Dr. Jaconua Schlecker of 3515 South Grand, St Louis. Michael's funeral was held at St James church on Monday. Cullen-Kelly of 1416 North Taylor Avenue were the undertakers. |
