Biography* | Josephine Neuheisel Hess, 1844-1928: Josephine's tombstone and obituary both list her birth year as 1843. However, the Neuheisel family did not arrive in the United State until September 1844 and Josephine is not listed on the ship's passenger list. Moreover, all pieces of evidence, save one, list her birthplace as Wisconsin not Germany. This suggests that Josephine was born in 1844 - not 1843 - and that her mother was six-months pregnant when the family got off the boat. Josephine was probably born in Lyons Township, Walworth County, Wisconsin. Baptismal records of the Burlington church, where several of her later siblings were christened, do not exist prior to 1846. She married her third cousin, Jacob Hess, in 1869 at Saint Luke's in Plain, Wisconsin. Her brother, Balthasar Neuheisel, was one of the witnesses. The other witness was William Girring. Josephine, age 83, died on a Tuesday at the home of her son-in-law, James McKune. She was survived by one son, two daughters, twenty-two grandchildren, and one brother. She was preceded in death by her husband and by six of her nine children. Her funeral was held on Thursday at Saint John's in Spring Green with the Rev. C. B. Weikmann officiating. |

Married in 1869, he bought his first farm, of 20 acres, in Franklin township, Sauk County in 1870. Where he lived in the interim is unknown. There John B. bought 60-acres in Spring Green township in 1874 and another 40-acres, same township, in 1876. He and Margaret sold both of these properties in 1877. By the following year, 1878, John B. was back in Franklin township where he bought 80-acres. He bought additional 40-acre parcels in 1878, 1883, and 1886 by which time, in case you're not keeping track, he owned a total of 200-acres. John B. and wife Margaret sold 80 of these acres in 1886 and the remaining 120-acres in 1892. By 1895, the family had moved to Sauk City, still in Sauk County. In 1896, his wife Margaretha died. About 1916, he moved to the Chippewa County area where he lived in Holcombe Township with two sons, Conrad and Isadore.
