Biography* | James "Jim" McKune, 1855-1951: There is a conflict concerning James' birthdate and birthplace. His Sauk County death record lists his birthdate as 2 February 1855, his obituary lists it as 19 February 1855. Most records list his, and his mother's, birthplace as Virginia (his father was born in Ireland). The only record that lists his birthplace as West Virginia is his Sauk County death record (which also lists the town - Wheeling). In any event, Jim came to the Spring Green area with his parents when he was two months old. The family settled in the Wilson Creek neighborhood, a mile and a half northeast of the village. He lived the rest of his life in the Spring Green area except for a brief experience homesteading in Oregon. His marriage to Frances Hess was his second, his first wife having died circa 1887. In 1900, he owned a mortgaged farm in Spring Green township. In 1920, he owned a mortgaged house in the village. He wasn't in Spring Green in 1910. This must have been when he was in Oregon. Jim, age 96, the oldest resident of Spring Green, died on a Sunday morning at his home where he lived with his daughter. In addition to his daughter, he was survived by one brother, and four sisters. He was preceded in death by both of his wives and one son. Funeral services were held on Wednesday from Saint John's in Spring Green with Monsignor Henry Toeller officiating. |
